Here attached in the PDF at the bottom of this post are the complete rules for the 2010 Big Bang! Open Tournament.

Please read the entire 5 pages of rules. But, I particularly call your attention to these three sections:

1.) SHOOTING DAYS

The Tournament shooting will be held for two days starting Friday, July 16, 2010 and ending Saturday, July 17, 2010.
Participants can start shooting upon sufficient light, and shoot each day until there is no longer sufficient light. In other
words, there is no need to rush. You have up to two days to get your diving drops and/or to enjoy the full benefit of what you may have paid for with a charter boat. However, you are NOT required to hunt two days if you decide one day is enough.
Participants agree and promise that only fish shot on Friday and Saturday, July 16-17, 2010 will be presented for weigh-in.
Voice stress lie detection examinations will be used randomly and selectively at the weigh-in to verify this promise and
compliance with other rules. If requested, you agree to submit to such an examination.

2.) FISH CATEGORIES

http://www.spearboard.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=126427&d=1272424068

The maximum number of fish that a contestant can potentially enter is nine (9) including the wild card fish explained below.

* Note: Other species of legal Grouper, Snapper and Jack may be weighed, as well. They must of course be legal to harvest in federal and state waters. Other species might include Black Grouper, Yellowfin Grouper, Cubera Snapper, Dog Snapper, Mutton Snapper, Yellow Jack, Almaco Jack,.etc.

** this BBO reduction from 2 to 1 in the grouper/scamp category is caused by law changes on the east coast of Florida. Even though you have up to two days to hunt, we are allowing only one grouper to be weighed so that those who choose to hunt only one day will not be at a disadvantage.

*** we have added a “wild card fish” to offset the grouper reduction. Your wild card fish can be a barracuda or any fish now eligible in the above categories except you may not weigh in a second gag or black grouper. Therefore, you may still bring in nine fish as in the past and the maximum potential points will remain the same.

Note: fish measurement is based on the current measurement to fork or overall as required by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission no matter where the fish was harvested. Cobia, Jacks, Triggerfish and Hogfish are measured to the fork. The weighmaster has the final say on all fish being weighed.

3.) SPECIAL PRIZES AND TROPHIES FOR THE CUMULATIVE THREE YEAR SERIES SCORES

In addition to the above prizes and trophies for the 2010 competition only, there will be special prizes and trophies for the top 30 participants best cumulative series scores over three years of Spear Wars Blue Storm Tournaments including 2008 + 2009 + 2010. For purposes of this calculation, your 2010 points will be doubled. Thus, hunting for two days and doubling the earned points will properly align this 2010 event with the prior years. To qualify for this special multi-year competition, you must be registered in the 2010 BBO and you must weigh-in at least one fish and be present in person to receive your trophies and/or prizes.

There will be a total of three (3) Trophies up for grabs (based on what has already been manufactured):

1.) 2010 Big Bang! Series Overall Winner 2.) 2010 Big Bang! Series Best Freediver

3.) 2010 Big Bang! Series Best Female Diver

Lastly, these are the current standings for the cumulative three years series scores. No matter where you stand going into this event, remember that many of these past participants may not compete this year and you will earn double points over two days of hunting that can significantly raise your cumulative score. Also, keep in mind that if you did not compete in the past years, there will still be a huge prize table and ten trophies to compete for in the main 2010 tournament. Please read the entire 5 pages of rules for details.

The question came up about Red Snapper being currently closed on the east coast. According to the attached, they should be open by tournament date in July for the east coast. Before posting this announcement, I had called the Gulf Council and they said last year the Gulf Red Snapper closure began August 15, 2009. We are watching these regulations and think there will be a window on the tournament dates July 16-18 where Red Snapper will be open on both coasts. Monitoring these regs is a challenge. We hear directly from Roy Crabtree that Amberjack may be closed in the Gulf shortly AFTER our event, but that timing could change also. Standing by on these closure issues, Tony

The SAFMC has publically stated that they intend to follow up with a more permanent closure of red snapper. They even mention it in the flyer you attached. Seems awful risky to plan on it being open during the tournament, putting east coasters at a disadvantage to west coasters if it does remain closed.

If the SAFMC closes the East Coast for Red Snappers, then I am quite sure that Tony will need to make an accommodation for that, most likely just dropping red snapper and possibly adding another fish. Maybe we can learn to shoot spadefish?

Hey Steve, good point. Interestingly, last year we had both Red Snapper and Amberjack closed for the Key Largo Open. That was when Biggsy and I got creative and added the barracuda (which was donated to shark scientists) as a category item with cobia plus as a wild card fish. Most participants seemed to like that move. We will see what happens with AJs and Reds this July and adjust accordingly to try and make everyone happy and level the playing field. Thanks for your input, Tony

Good news on the red snapper in the Gulf for this Big Bang! Open Tournament. Now, let's see what happens in the Atlantic. Here is the message this morning from Roy Crabtree:

Tony, Gulf red snapper will close at 12:01 am on July 24. Sorry for being slow to respond but we are swamped with oil spill issues. -Roy

Looks like a great tournament.....the rules look about as fair as possible. That location for the weigh in looks sweet also....
