North Star

I and my two sons Calvin and Caleb went to Newport on the Oregon coast on Friday and Saturday and shot some nice lings and rock fish on the north reef. We were diving on scuba from our boat. Vis was 12-15 feet.
Calvin got a huge cabezon, and Caleb's ling was 33". We got a couple more that were 30", and an assortment of other rock fish. The photos are from the two days of spearing, all limits were observed - in fact, we got checked by F&G at the dock, and they were happy.
The biggest Cab I shot (27") immediatly headed for a hole, and I grabbed the shooting line to try to stop him short, but there was too much slack in the line and by the time I got it tight he had disappeared with my spear. He went into a hole that no way was I going to try to go into to try to retrieve him - too dangerous - but I was able to lay on my side and reach into the hole as far as I could and just grab the end of the spear, and I wrestled him out of there.
When I got him out of the hole I saw the spear had almost come out of him, because he had been laying on a rock when I shot him from above, and the rock stopped the spear from exiting and the floppers from opening.
I jammed him against a hollow spot and forced the spear the rest of the way through him and he was mine - a little exciting battle that he lost and I won.
A great day and a great time with my boys. Had fish sticks on Sunday - nothing like fresh fish that you shot yourself.
