That is a scary thought. You always think that just because it is a computer that it is accurate. I hope this defect applies only to that one model of computer from that particular year. I was thinking of buying a UWATEC smart com computer.

Different computer manufacturers use different algorithms to calculate allowable dive time. Uwatec and Suunto are among the most conservative. Oceanic is among the most liberal.
I have had friends who dove Suuntos dump their computers on eBay after seeing how much more bottom time that I was allowed on my Oceanic.
I'm not saying that you should always dive the limits of your computer, but that I'd rather have a computer that allows me to dive more conservatively than a computer that insists that I do so under penalty of lockout.
I don't know if you've already seen it, but the Smart Pro and Smart Com were reviewed side by side with the Oceanics in the Jan/Feb 2003 issue of Rodale's Scuba Diving. The article includes a "Freedom vs. Risk" chart that compares the conservatism of the various manufacturers. I can't find the article online (probably because it is so new), but I'll fax or mail it to you if you are interested (just PM me). There is a similar chart that was done in 2000 at http://www.scubadiving.com/gear/2001gear/freedomrisk.shtml] It doesn't discuss Uwatec, but it does compare Suunto and ScubaPro (which makes Uwatec).

Just read that you got yourself an Oceanic on the other thread. Congratulations! Everyone I know who has one loves it.
