I've decided I want to get a custom tank diving suit made and have narrowed my decision to either Deep Thought or JMJ. Looks to me like they are both quality suits and pricing is similar. I grew-up in SB, so that makes me kinda loyal to local businesses like Deep Thought (even though I guess they're in Ventura County now), but my daughter is a grad student in Irvine (i.e., I visit Orange County often), so JMJ would be easy to get to if I need any repairs or alterations. By the way, I want the suit for Nor Cal diving (Monterey, Somona, Mendo, etc.), so, cold water, like a 7mm suit.
Any of you guys have experience with both suit makers??? Any comments on quality of either???

I have a Deep Thoughts custom suit that I got back when I dove for work. Quarter inch farmer john, quarter inch hooded jacket. Held up pretty well, seeing as I put 300+ dives on it in the span of a year. I did have some issues with seams and threads coming undone that couldn't be fixed with just neoprene cement and neocoat, probably around the 75 dive mark. I would think that wouldn't be as much of a problem if you're recreational diving though. Pretty warm, too, as long as its sized correctly. It did take about 3 adjustments/alterations before the suit fit correctly, and that translated to about 6-8 weeks until I was finally able to dive with it.

i have a deep thoughts 5mm suit and i only needed 1 alteration in the ankles. iv had it for 9 months with little signs of ware i normally only get 1 year out of a suit 90% shore dives , but from the looks of this suit ill probable get 2. if you do go with a deep thought, go directly to Antonio in Oxnard where there made!!! deepthoughtsuits@hotmail.com
i don't know about JMJ but i would go with whatever is the most convenient so if you do need a alteration or repair.

I've had one No Thought suit, it was horrible and expensive and they could not get it to fit right. I've had over a dozen JMJ suits and Highly recommend them. They really go the extra mile for their customers, and their service is second to none.

I haven't had a no thought, but I've had several JMJs, and my experience is the same as Scotty's. Come to think of it, Scotty was the one who sent me to JMJ many years ago.
Recently I washed the lube out of the leg of my suit trying to warm it with hot water, and then with my fin sock already on, tried to force my foot through. I tore open the seam between the upper and lower leg, and it was entirely my fault. The suit is over a year old, and some of the seams were leaking just a bit. I took it in to get the big problem repaired, and asked them to take a look at the rest of the seams while they were at it. When I went to pick it up, they had re glued every seam in the suit, and they didn't charge me a dime.
That is typical of their service.

i made the mistake of ordering my deep thought suit through andy at blue water hunter. it ended up taking two months of constantly nagging him to get it. however, its was worth every penny. it fits great (i'm glad i went custom), its super warm, easy to get on/off, and seemingly well made. i really couldn't be any happier.

Thanks gentlemen. So what I'm taking away is that they're both good suits...just pick whichever one is more convenient for custom fitting, alterations and repairs. I met Antonio once...struck me as a really nice guy and a good craftsman...think I'll go that route.

unbelievable. guy strung me along for 11 weeks. Cant believe he's still in biz
I wouldnt hesitate on this one. Go for the Deep Thoughts. Never ever had anything but great customer service from Antonio at Deep Thoughts. Obviously u put some serious wear and tear on my suits and they hold up great and dont break down from compression as quick as other suits/material

I have a Deep Thought 7mm 2 piece hooded suit for sale, only used it once in Catalina for a deep dive, suit is in perfect condition. I moved to the Florida Keys from S.B. so I don't need a 7mm suit (water is 78+ all year round) Fits a guy 5'10" -6'1", 175-210lbs. The price is right, if interested email me at info@reefsniper.com Or you can call me at 805-403-7752, I'll hook you up if you think it will fit you.
Thanks,
Joe
