There are two ways to look at it. It would be nice if we could shoot a quick, instant, msg to someone in real time, but... you run the risk of turning spearboard into a chat room.

The great thing about spearboard is the fact that we have so many people contributing their knowledge, or lack thereof :D, to the site. I can sign on at any time of the day or night and read what has been discussed since the last time I logged on. With the instant msg/chat thing, many of those discussions would be lost.
I say let's keep it the way it is.
