I am looking for some divers in Okinawa. My buddy is over there in the Marines and is looking for a dive buddy or two. I know a guy named Darshawn used to visit the site, but I haven't seen anything from him in a while.

Rabi,
I was stationed in Okinawa in the late 90's. The diving in Okinawa is among the best.
Tell your friend to look up a guy named Rich Ruth......a former active duty Marine who opened up his own dive shop. Here's the website. http://www.fathoms.net/ Rich was my instructor for AOW and rescue classes. He's a good guy who would definately help out a fellow Marine.
Also, if he's stationed at Camp Butler/Camp Foster....the dive shop on base is a good bet.....there are always divers looking for a dive buddy.

I'm here in Okinawa, being that my brand new spear gun is hold up in customs right now I will be doing very little free diving, but if SCUBA is what you like, I'm your man. I have many a people to dive with, but the more the marrier in my opinion.

Prayot is kinda busy but he might be able to. I can go out under some sircumstances. I wont do anything crazy again until xrays on wednesday. Hopefully a miracle has taken place and Im all good. Otherwise I will loose more hair in the operation. But if all is good its dive on in AUG. with the man, Dr. Daryl Wong and CMC Rick Bettua.
Oh Rob! Last night I braught Yoshi a 6 pack and we kicked it. He was like telling me that place that shin is on has a shit load of fish!!! We should deff go there along with the plan in june.
Also those guns in your room are not yours. Just temp storage :D How do ya like em? Dude let me know about those special fins. They the ones on flfreedivers? The next pair I wish to buy is carbon strictly for freediving but I dont think anywhere sells em and Im tired of buying stuff from europe. I think I can hit 110ft right now or more on free immersion. (pulling down an anchor line)
Dude so much stuff to talk about.
While your reading this check ME (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGDwScgb_Y0) out back in my younger days.

How far down do you guys normally go while freediving?
BreathlessSight
05-01-2007, 12:23 PM
Normal is around 50 average. I have hit over a hundred back in my youth. Mainly where ever the fish are. If strictly freediving its where ever I think I can go and still be safe with my safety divers, freedivingfool and Rbautista01.

So I plan to go out possibly tomorrow afternoon to test the waters. If not then I will try to go both Sat and Sun. Despite weather. Basically just looking to go out and try my new gun. I hope it turns out good. Let me know if anyone has the inclination to go out with a complete newb. :yawwn:

I might be able to get out next week if you can go. We usually go early though because breathless works swing shift. We went out today to maeda flats and saw a few taman, but I have a brand new gun so I missed every shot except for a good sized roy. Kev got a nice rabbit fish schooling with a taman, but it was pretty desolate out there.

I usually hunt 20-65ft with ease. I hit 60ft today which was my first dive after deployment. Breathless has done 100ft, but can probably do more.

So me and a buddy from work went out yesterday afternoon. Got to the place that we decided would be good to fish at about 1530 and started our first trial. I'm gonna say that from trial came error. I hit one little fish, towards the end of the time spent before my buddy got cold. And he told me before we went out "I wouldn't worry about wearing a wet suit dude" haha. Anyway, we stayed out there for about 2 to 2 and a half ours. I noticed that after each time I went down I felt more comfortable, and could stay a bit longer. Oh, when I shot the fish with my Aimrite gun it was like a hot knife through butter. Awesome. We're about to go out now. Hopefully the weather doesn't play this morning. It is 0730 now.

Alright...... Noone told me that this shit was going to be so exhausting. haha I am beat. We just came back from our second spearfishing attempt. We went.... Well yesterday, we went about 15 minutes North of Maeda Point. Maybe it was Maeda Flats. I don't know. It was right between Suragaki beach and Maeda Point. Nothing really note worthy. It seemed that there were too many places for the little bastards to hide, and newbs can't stay down that long so.... Nothing to report for that. Today we went a bit north of Camp Courtney by the pier. It was lame, muggy, and the current was pulling us all over the place. Despite that, we managed to shoot 4 fish. Basically just zeroing our guns in I think. I had a few (to include what I thought was a mimic Octopus) on my spear but they got off. Pissed. Anyway, just getting some trips under my belt. We spent like 5 hours in the water. Time flies when you're having fun. Hit me up let me know what ya think, and if you want to take me out to a place where I might kill some good fish.

I swam friday in the pool and then dove at night on saturday for 5 hours. Freediving at night is a crazy high. All you see is whats in front of you. Well before we dove we lifted. I lifted everything but legs of course and then dove. Im pretty warm and fatigued but shoot I would have gone out today.
Awsome stuff. I still want to dive with that whale shark but dont know if I want to pay that much to torture a caged animal. Still want to freedive with it though. Ride on its back and all of that.

YOu should get "don-in-japan" to take you out. Thats where it all started for me. :P
Seriously I would take ya out if you dont mind hauling my gear. Im kinda gimped. I wouldnt fish around maeda its kinda a waste of time for fishing. You could always just practice freediving then spearfishing. I think freediving is the more difficult one to learn unless your using a pole spear. Despite what people say I personally think bottom time is important for catching fish here.

LOL ~ There are no secret spots on Okinawa!
Well we went further North like you always wanted to do instead of the reefs toward the south. There was a big snapper like the one we toyed with down south, Coral Trout, and knife Jaws. All were small but the snapper. But I waited 2min on the bottom for him to come in and he never did and once I approached him he went for his cave. I didnt have someone that could dive down that deep with me so I did my best to search but I had to get in the cave/overhang to get him. For I saw a ledge he had to be in, a fish his size wouldnt be hard to miss and I search everywhere else but that spot.
Me and Rob want to hit those reefs out there where you see the waves break. Its about 4 or 5 spots. Also I think Wednesday we are gonig to, depending on the weather, got to higashi village. There is a bay there and we are thinking about kayaking all the way around to the cliffs. So it would be like going to stairway and swimming a long way south. That or go to ada and kayak north or south there. Somewhere very remote. I have spoted more spots that really look promising.
Im going to try really hard to get leave approved in June to go to the karamas. Prayot Im just going to through this out there cuz I really dont think its right that you dont know especially after you invited me to the Karamas. But Cameron Kirkonel is coming this june and wants to spearfish some spots. That is not the good info. I would say your wife could load any gun she wanted. Dont think that she is hindered cuz she is a woman. Its all about the technique of loading your gun. Usually I hold the handle in my right hand and hold onto a band and push the handle towards it as I pull it in. Simultaneously putting the butt on my chest once the gun is in front of me. Its fast and effiecent and you probably have no clue what Im talking about. Low volume masks help in O2 consumption. If you want to get better just practice under safe conditions.
skinnerusmc
05-14-2007, 05:01 PM
Dude thanks for the technique tutorial. I have been keeping the butt of the gun on my hip and pulling it down. It is very possible, but I think I may have strained my shoulder doing so. I'll definitely try the way you told me to. I managed to re-load the way I was doing it a lot of times, but I can see that the way you told me would be much easier. I will be heading to Okuma on Thursday afternoon to set up this family day for my company, but I'm going to be in the water the majority of the time that I'm not working. Any recommendations for that area? I'd like to get together with you guys on your weekend outings sometime. Let me know when, and I'll let you know if I'm free. Today we hit a spot that no one can hit unless you have a boat or kayak. If you have a kayak be prepared for a long ARSE paddle. The swells where HUGE and I still have the feeling of riding em. We got up at 6am and didnt get back home till about 8pm. The begining of the day sucked with nothing but 1 8lb Mu which Rob (cheeky Bastard) didnt land. Prayot, we will go in june during our 2 weeks off. I put in for it, you got it, and Rob is trying to get it. We can hit that spot or better yet another one I have in mind. That spot we went to can have huge swells so ya might want to bring big blue (kayak).
Oh it was funny. There was a white tip at this spot and rob dove on it and with it circling rob, Rob shot a coral trout. It must have been the one you poked cuz it took off for the deep in a hurry like it knows... :p
ROB!!!! Tell the story about my buddy MR. Parrot and how none of his friends liked him while he was swimming next to me. I was showing him around the reef.... Oh and there is where I shot you in the face, and... OH! look your friends. HAHA No one liked MR. Parrot. HAHAHA That stuff was hilarious! It was such a good hunting strategy too!

That coral trout Rob got was 3.5kg, 2.5kg, 2kg, 1.5kg roughly. The parrot was 3kg and a 4kg roughly. The Knife jaw was only a 1.8kg.

belive it or not, Im from Kauai, but all my compeditive training came from oahu friends, in 2004 the oahu guys got pissed at us kauai team that came there and made the nationals, on their on turf. I strongly assume, if you can poke fish on Oahu, you can poke fish anywhere in the world. I shot alot of potential record fish, but never cared to submit them, maybe I should.
I will share a piece of advice: carry a calander that shows (moon, tide, etc) and log your dive events for that day. (more in a private msg.)
and im sorry if I see to come off wrong, but I am a compeditive diver, and re-entering the eliminations/nationals in 2008, so its hard for me to share info at times, but I will start sharing and passing info. and yes you said it correctly, its all about knowing "when" to dive a certain locations on okinawa that will produce the best results.

Ya I know what your talking about. By looking at my fish prints most of the fish were caught in the end of the month. Usually thats a full or new moon. I thaught there was something fishy there.
Oahu was tough but I think this place is just the same sometimes. I have seen big mu and it takes lots of bottom time for them. Sometimes you get lucky and find the dumb ones that come in fast. I cant wait to get back there in AUG and get me a big Ulua. Biggest one I hit here was 9kg and its the biggest I have seen from shore.

Alright, so I went up to Okuma this weekend, and went spearing on Thursday and Friday. Thursday, the only fish to speak of was the one that I'm holding up with my hand. Friday was the day I caught my best catch yet. (The other pic of fish). Every time I go out I have caught a personal best fish. So, I thinking it should continue to do that. I figured out about 30 minutes before my buddy wanted to go in to shore to rest, that you pretty much have to go somewhat deep to get good sized fish. We were searching for large fish in shallow water for the most part. When we got out to somewhat blue water, the fish were larger and less skidish. It's a lot easier to sneak up on them in deeper water as well. Anyway, this is what you all already know, and this is what I just realized. Practice makes perfect I'm sure. I think I was in the 30 to 40 foot range. And I timed myself for a 45 second breath hold. I'm getting better and more comfortable as my trips go by. This shit is bad ass.

Today I got to see another shark, turtle, Cod, snapper, Progy, Peacock grouper, goats, and lots of parrots. Most were skiddish and really deep. Practiced long shots with no sucess.

I've been a long time lurker on the board and thought I'd post. I've been fishing on Okinawa a while and have just picked up spearfishing. I usually go out to the Payao's in a chartered boat for fishing, but recently asked the captain if he would take out some spearfisherman. He said he would be willing to make the trip, I'm planning around mid-July if not sooner. Right now we're catching a lot of Mahi, Wahoo and small football Tuna's at the Payao's, around July the Tuna will be thick, the Mahi and Wahoo scarce.
If anyone is interested in jumping on a trip, the boat can handle up to 7 people. I've got 2 already, just need 5 more bodies. If interested or want more info drop me an email at joelovesfishin at yahoo dot com.

Well you could put your gun in line with a float line. You can just go to makemon and buy the nylon braided rope. I use this for my anchor line but it works well as a float line. Its just alittle messy due to the thiness of the line. You can make a bungie out of band material and just pick up a float off the beach. :D

Cool, I don't know about the McGyver rig, I'll definitely look into it though. Here's the story on the Kayak. It's kinda funny. So I've been on island for 2 years and some change, and all the while have seen this blue 2 seater kayak sitting by the gate. I asked camp services, and it turns out it is "lost property". I had to get camp services to make me feel OK about taking it. So now I have a Kayak. It seems like it hasn't been used too much, should be in descent shape. Regardless, I bought a rack for a car from Japan update today for $45. If I don't go with my buddy who has a surf, it will look funny to have a Kayak on a Honda Domani for sure. My buddy has school work or some shit so we'll see. I am going out this weekend, hell or high water! My wife works all weekend, so I will be hunting fish. Let me know where you want to meet, and I'll be there either with my buddy or not. :thumps:

BJ Penn whipped that ass. He was just toying with Pulver. Did you see how Pulver "escaped" the arm bar? Penn let him out because he wanted to pound his face. And again on the leg triangle at the end? He had that sunk in tight. He didn't take him out because he wanted to keep nailing him with those vicious elbows. And yet again after Jens tapped out BJ just squeezed harder on the rear naked choke to finish. Good sportsmanship? Maybe not. Pretty bad ass though.

Alright, I've made my decision about the gear I'm going to buy. None of it is top of the line, but looks like a good deal to me for price and quality. The fins mask and booties are going to be all black, and the snorkel clear. No black available. I think it will be better that way. The total price for all of it is 199.80 and about 15 dollars shipping. There is an OmerSub package that is the same for pretty much the same as this set up, but I like the rubber soled socks vs the solid neoprene socks. They seem to be more durable.

yea I feel bad about the other fish that got off, but they were all bigger than 60-70lbs from my eyes. other team members was landing 15-20lbs gaata's, had some serious monster Makabus and groupers, , but they were at the bottom ranging from 78-103ft deep. belive me these big boys arent dumb fish "just have to know when and how to hit them up" also had some monster AmberJacks but we did not want to shoot any of those.
my 9/32 shaft probably just irritated them. will go back later and see if I can land them again next week. i use a 110 euro gun. slightly modified. 2rubbers and 9/32 shaft with single barb.

Sounds like an aimrite gun or something. Secret spot eh? I thaught you guys went out on a boat?
Oh the secret spot game eh?
Our secret spot comes with the legend... Shin Mcguyver and big fish, tuna included.
Freedivingfool shot a Gara and the locals went crazy for it. We fed a lot of peoples in that village! They also traded with us. The smiles on thier faces make our secret spot priceless!
Still nice fish!

I dont know why people have secret spots. I tell everyone where I go. I even take most peoples. The only place I cannot take or show people is the tuna spot. Its out of respect for the legend which asked me not diclose it.

There is only a few spots we havent tried, most of which are on the east side. So when do you want to go out? Or trade spots?

This is from Ed Dunn's Weekend Dive and Boating Forecast. Important information for you guys that frequent the Onna Village area. I'm not sure if this applies to all of Onna or just Maeda.
"Good morning. As a lot of you know, Maeda recently opened with a new and
improved site for all to enjoy. What has not been published by Onna Village
is the use of Hawaiian Slings and spear guns whether on scuba or snorkel is
illegal. I have been asked and have submitted suggestions to the Onna
Village office, in which one is to place signs in English so we all know the
rules and regulations for Maeda Point. How soon they will be placed there
is any ones guess, but hopefully soon. The Healthy Food Kitchen is now
opened and offers a verity of good food and is manage by Cohen Ronen, or
simply Ron. Make sure you have Yen for parking. They do not accept
dollars."

That place has always been "touristy". Onna figures they can turn a profit by charging for parking now..and keeping out the rif-raf like spearfishermen. Too many Naichas/Yamatus and other tourists go there...don't want to scare them off! $$$

Well, I just couldn't wait to get out in the water with my new gear. Those fins were crazy. They fit perfect, the neoprene socks are a little loose, but it is completely tolerable. They're just socks right. Walking on the coral wasn't too bad, and I hit 63 feet very quickly, and made it to the surface even quicker. I only dove in board shorts, and no shirt so there may be a difference when I put a wet suit on but not much. There was a complete difference in the mask too. It was effortless clearing, and I didn't have to blow air into it due to the pressure at 60'ish feet. Nice. I'm glad I didn't get any stiffer of fins, because as it stands right now, I feel a little strain on the top of my foot from the pull of the fin. Not too bad, just something I'll probably need to get use to. Maeda point in a whole different light. Let the spearfishing commence.

Japanman: I will deffinately go out on your boat. I want to shoot mambika so bad!!!!! But all the locals are like its too dangerous on the east side. skinnerusmc
07-06-2007, 08:27 AM
Fairly shallow. So it's not an ulua? I'm still figuring the names for all the damn fish. The names that are given to fish in Hawaii make it confusing enough, and it seems like there are other names for all fish on top of that. How does jack fish taste?
BreathlessSight

Awesome skinner!!! How come when you came out with us you didnt nail any of those? :p They were out there. So how did you end up eating it?
skinnerusmc
07-06-2007, 10:45 AM
Well, I didn't end up eating it just yet. What usually happens is I come home hungry, eat, then clean fish. It just always works that way for me. About thursday, I was too busy fighting the current, or trying to find you guys to get any good breath holds it seemed. I got a few good ones, but came up empty on the shots. The fish seemed a bit skiddish that day as well. You think? I think I'll be SCUBA diving tomorrow, so there is a chance I will be able to come out on Sunday.
BreathlessSight
07-06-2007, 10:58 AM
Naw not so skiddish. ONly when the tides stopped changing. Man that current started rippin through when the tides did change. We ended up all the way in china it seemed. Well FDF said he saw a big Ulua about 80lbs come out of a hole after he shot one of those single white banded fish. So he yelled for me and I came over. (keep in mind this has happened a million times) So I was in no hurry to come over. He told me the story like always and he went down as I watched. I then went down to check for myself. There was a small hallway of a tunnel. I didnt see anything and explored what I could with the rest of the connecting holes. I saw nothing. Amazing how such big fish can squeeze and hide in small places. Oh ya the first shot I took was on a school of Blue fin trevally but I dove too late and they werent stoping so I took a long shot hoping to hit the biggest one but came up short.

Yeah, I'd like to get the gun, but I'm not just going to jump into something. There are a million options out there. Ya know? I really want to check it out, see how it works, and see the difference in it, from mine. I'm also considering whether I should go ahead and keep mine as a low vis gun or whatever, or sell it and get another (yours). Like I said, plenty of options. Another thing is if you are hurting for the cash, you might want to just go ahead, cause I can't tell you how soon I will be able to take it off your hands. We are paying some attention to some bills. Shouldn't be more than a month or 2 though. No worries about today. It was nice to just chill. I slept till noon. haha We'll see about this weekend. Saturday is clear for me.
FDF. If a yak is necessary for me to come out with you guys, is it a possibility that I borrow? I know it's a lot to ask from a guy you just met, so no is a more than acceptable answer.
BreathlessSight
07-08-2007, 10:23 AM
Well Ill put it up on the board but I will let you use it till it sells.
You should try out many guns. I know thats hard cuz they just dont let you test em out like a car. But if you get to know many people then you can use different ones. You can try my Rabitech guns, the Aimrite, maybe one of the other guys' Rob Allens, or if you just want to feel some power you can try my 60" 3 5/8 banded Hybrid shooting a 5/16 shaft. Or even the smaller 55" hybrid with 9/32 shaft and 2 5/8 bands.
Mainly for around here all you need is a euro type gun. Not to mention its not as much $$$ as wood guns. The only fish that would laugh at a eruo gun that I have seen around here besides the 100+lb tunas is the 60+lb Napolean Wrasses out here. But a good euro should handle that as well. Its amazing those tri point tips, they go threw everything! Main thing is to get w/e works for you.

Today we went down souf and the water was rather clear. I first saw some Roi and coral trout. Missing the trout cuz something else grabbed my attention. But it happen to be nothing. I shot a yellow jack, Roi, and a sweet lips the size of the one you have up in that pic. What we was hoping to see were napolean again but saw none. Also didnt go to the right spot in the water to see em anyway. We saw some big red snappers too. I had a shot at 2 Ulua about 20lbs or more. I had a line up hs but he turned so I took a shot at the next one. Thinking I had to compensate for shaft drop like the other gun I aimed high and missed :( Oh well... Also saw an awa. Rob shot a small blue fin trevelly. Skinner hit some fish as well. I tried to get him over to me to shoot the jacks that came in after I shot thier bud. But they left. Also I had one ulua I think it was on my shaft and it took my gun and float line down. I went down to grab it since it was hit in the high head and only had a little meat holding it on. But it slipped up the mono and that stuff cut through it like butter. So I lost it after that fight :(
Rob was shootin up the MU!!! Also had a shot at a big whip tail coral trout. Hes been seeing lots of those. But missed. Rob just didnt have his A game today like usual. :(

It was great hanging out with you guys even if our diving was limited. Can't wait to get back out there and hit it again.

Reyton,
You going to be in town for this? You should come and invite others if there is room.
Have you guys ever dove with them? I got a bluewater trip lined up right now for labor day.
