This fish is actually the Greater Soapfish. Thought some of you would like to see this odd fish. It is mostly for Keezdiver so he knows that they really do live down here and should be counted like all the other Sea Basses. I saw three of them today, teo where at 50', one down at 90'. They are mostly nocturnal but you often see them below coral heads or under overhangs.

The coloration in the photo is a little more blotchy than they look underwater. They are more of an even grey brown with those white snow spots.

Not bad for a fried fish sandwich. The only problem is this one is big at 14". Not much meat left to share after your sandwich. I'd say it would be a huge waste of time to target these.

I see about a hundred of those thing in one day of rig diving.

I never even though about shooting something that small.

geez brian...once i figured out what you were talking about when you called it a "panther grouper", which IS a pacific species...i agreed that i saw them...

sheesh... ;)

i would think they are quite full of worms being a bottom fish like hinds.

but who knows.

could be one of those fish that you fry in a nice iron skillet, throw the fish away and eat the pan ;)
