View Full Version : Jack LaLanne and the Red Boat..

...Sunday, one of my heros passed on..Jack was still a spry, energetic 96 year old when time ran out..Some years back, Jack decided to tow 6 row boats loaded with fishermen, divers and other motley types, just using a rope and his teeth...Dale Cote and I volunteered the red boat for logistical and safety support...
...We all went down to Long Beach harbor and it was on....somewhere along the way, we weren't consulted about tides and timing..the result was that poor Jack made no headway outbound to the breakwater, as the tide was rushing in thru the channel at a good clip...not all was lost, however..the photographers on our boat took some great publicity pics shown worldwide and being old school gentlemen, never mentioned the lack of headway...What I remember most about that day, is that although Jack lost the race against nature, he still had a big smile and great attitude about it... In my book, he was a winner!
...For Christmas, I bought my wife the Jack LaLanne "Juicer", guaranteed to bring good health.. She loves it...My guess is, that right about now, Jack is putting the angels on a workout plan so they can fly faster...and probably, taking their orders for his juicer...

The LA Times had a front page obit yesterday, and I almost posted a link.
I never watched his TV show, but I don't think most people realize what he contributed. Before Jack, coaches wouldn't let their athletes lift weights. He opened the first fitness gym in the country in Oakland in 1936. He made it OK for women to work out (his greatest contribution :)).
The guy was a world changer.

I remember seeing him when I was just a kid on channel 5, amazing guy. My fiance bought his juicer as well and the juice kicks ass. The best jack show though was when he made a guest appearance on "the man show" and called adam and jimmy a bunch of pansies because they couldn't keep up with him.
Don't forget about the "Jumping Jack".

I have had the opportunity to meet Jack many times. While living in Morro Bay we seemed to have the same eating patterns and we would often talk at whatever restaraunt we were at. He would always talk fitness and training, always.
Here's the story...at a quiet restaraunt when I was out with a girl, Jack started talking to me about the need to be pumping iron instead of endurance training. His talk was just like the Juicer comercials and he got very into it. At the end of the conversation, lifting his right hand and index finger and saying to me while poking me in the arm,"It's not in here that counts, it's up here!" He switched from poking my arm to poking me in the head, but missed. His finger ended up knuckle deep in my eye. It hurt like hell but was very funny. I don't think he realized what he did because of the wine buzz he had going. He just slapped my arm and left.
I had always been a huge fan because my grandfather was very into fitness. I was lucky to get to know him a little bit. He was the real deal.

I'm jealous. Its always great to see a prominent personality in person, no matter what you think of him, and Jack seemed like a hell of a personality.
I think that tops my best restaurant encounter- sitting at a table close to John Wayne and his wife. We didn't even talk. :)

And don't forget his pups. Jack had a pair of very well trained Shepards.
We used to joke about him while at Bakers and Ft Mason, but knew we couldn't do the same feats of endurance. He was the Chuck Norris of his time...simply unmatched and could stop the world if he wanted to!

Now, my wife makes me drink her damn carrot/celery juice drinks every week...
Add some parsley and a Red Delicious apple to that drink, the parsley is better than caffeine.

Jack was the MAN !!! That is for sure.
I got one of his juicers as well. He is a real class act and truly wanted the world o be as healthy as he.
Also, juice tip. Add Cilantro to your veggie juices. It makes a huge huge difference.

Today, I sent a copy of my story to Jack's wife along with all the input blogs from divers...I think she, their 2 sons and daughter, will enjoy reading your comments about Jack...
