I've only been hunting for a couple of years and have always used a line gun and never shot the monstas that I see some of you monkeys yanking out of the drink. When is it a good time to freeshaft? What do you gain and what do you lose as opposed to a line gun?

It's always a good time to freeshaft. Your biggest benefit is much more range. The cost is you'll lose more shafts; so bring spares.
All I can say is, when I switched to freeshaft I was like, "Wow! Why didn't I do this earlier?".

Around here there are a lot of places that if your shaft goes over the edge of the reef without a line on it, with or without a fish, it's gone. #1 and I do most of our hunting on the edges.:)

I am positive freeshafting would be a bad idea on our oil rigs here in the gulf .but I am thinking of trying it on some of the freshwater lakes here .

OK, I'll amend my earlier comment. It's always a good time to freeshaft around here . Oil rigs, stuff like that - never done it before, but I can see where a freeshaft would be a bad idea.
All I can relate to is the hunting done in this area, and for that I can tell you that freeshaft is by far the method of choice.

the way you guys describe the hunting "over there" it sure seems free shafting is a pretty good idea. If I am ever fortunate enough to find a job over there [and talk the wife into moving ]
I sure intend to find out .
