Does anyone on the list have any experience diving "The Race" near Fishers Island? If so, I have the following questions;

1. Is there good fishing for Stripers? Until what time of the year?

2. The current looks like it may be pretty rough. How bad is it?

3. What are the best times/tides to dive this location?

4. Are there any other hazards to this location?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I shed there alot when I lived in RI. The current rips rips rips at 6 knots+. Current is si strong that boats at anchor have been sucked under.

I would drift it with a chase boat at almost slack tide. There are some huge stripers through there.

I fish the race and dive Fishers Island quite often. Incognito is right about the current. A small plane carrying two passengers crashed there last fall on a nice day with numerous boats in the vicinity. It was gone in an instant and never found. It can get nasty out there when the tide is running. And there can be a lot of boat traffic at times. There are enough big bass and blackfish all around Fisher's Island and Watch Hill that you don't have to risk your life for.
Fishingwise, the Race holds bass probably later than any other spot around, usually until Thanksgiving. Most guys three-way jigs or eels or troll jigs or umbrella rigs on wire. I wouldn't reccomend anchoring anywhere near the race. There is no reason to and it's dangerous in the current.
