H2O ADDICTION

Lost my 46 dollar dive knife yesterday at Wabasso in the 6-10 foot vis - So today I went looking for a cheap alternative.

Here it is - I customized it by adding straps and powerful magnets under and on top of the bottom strap to give some resistance - Strapped 'er to my leg - Should work great!

Malco Duct Knife - Home Depot - $13 bucks!

No...I took 'em off the sheath from the knife I lost - Made the hole's for the straps with a soldering iron. Strong magnets under and on top of the bottom strap hold the knife securely without using the velcro loop it comes with. It also has a belt loop attachment on the back. I like my knife on my leg so I attached the straps.

Glad I could help ya save a few bucks! :thumps:

And in "freshwater" you got a dive knife forever! So far mine is holding up good - Gave the metal parts a light coat of vaseline when I got it and been out twice now - Not a smidgeon of rust - They are stainless steel - But even stainless rusts' eventually!..... Dang saltwater!

What is this vaseline trick?

miguelitro
06-23-2011, 07:40 PM
if you keep things lubed up with vaseline and use them regularly they wont rust. you know, stuff like knives, bike chains, etc...:D

I really like this as a second knive, I put mine on my belt and will use the velcro strap for the time being.

They sre bsck in the Duct tools department. THe blade says stinless but the top doesnt look like it. I just took mine out of the wrapper today but havnt used it.

Im curious though, why did you add magnets? Magnets will not attract to stainless.

"Edited" I just checked and magnets will adhere to the blade. Just to make sure though, the magnets would not stick to my backplate or other stainless scuba parts.

None-the-less, I like the knife though, and if it holds up, well even better.

I went and looked at it today. Seems like a pretty nice knife, but it was a bit bigger than I like. If I seem to lose both of the knives I wear right now, I will definitely go get a couple. I like to have 2 on me when I dive. Not for safety, I just kill that many fish. I don't even use a speargun, just knives.

The one my buddy got ended up rusting a little bit, but nothing serious.

I didn't think SS was magnetic?

I didn't think SS was magnetic?

Certain grades of SS are magnetic, but are much more susceptible to corrosion too.

Mine has been out with me now a whole bunch of times - It does have some minor rust spots - But not enough to keep me from putting "the sleep" on a fish - or cutting a line or...

I bet I could get 5 years outta one easy - just rinse and wipe dry when you get home - hang the sheath to dry separately. If you got fussy with one it would last waaaay longer even. It might not be pretty - But I ain't so pretty these days either - I still get the job done! LOL!

Well, Im on my second one now. The first one is on the bottom now. I have to go look for it this week. I stuck it on my belt and forgot about it. When getting back into the boat on my last dive, I took my gear off and swam around a bit....Dooh!

well, I bought one, and bought the some velcro straps that will work just fine for strapping it to my leg. cost me about $15 total. :) just out of curiosity, why do you prefer not to use the Velcro loop it comes with?

Good tip on the knife it is a little big, but had my wife take old spearmaster sheath and sew on the leg holders works great now. Also cant beat the price of $14 and it is supper sharp. All I got to do is add the magnets

You know it, Matt. That Riffe you sold me is still killing fish around these parts.

For those of us too lazy to drive across town to save $10 on a dive knife. :-)

High quality stainless is not magnetic because the alloy has higher concentrations of chromium which is non-magnetic. Stainless that is magnetic is just lower quality and will still rust just at a slower rate than non-stainless.

This home depot knife is old news. It's too big and the blade shape is far from ideal for braining (too wide), or filleting. But worse, it's dull and I found it impossible to put a good edge on it.

H2O ADDICTION

Mine is still going strong - Not much rust either. Brained a bunch of fish and filleted a few as well. It is a little big - but for 13 bucks it'll do in a pinch and has. Some people prefer a BIG knife. I'd rather have a smaller thinner blade myself. :p

Someone is in a bad mood. :p

For $13 its a good knife.

I've spent more then 13 dollars at McDonald's.

My hd dive knife was not rinsed off in baja and then sat in the sheath for a few months. It is always on my weight belt and really only comes out under water for cutting out old fishing line, prying scallops and all the dirty work. It still has very little rust on it as far as I'm concerned. great deal for a belt knife but i too think its a bit big for a leg mount and way too big for a forearm.

I wouldn't even use it for duct tape which is its intended use :) Skeleton knives go for $10-15 and are a better choice, and they don't rust. If you plan on doing something well, you don't compromise for $20. One of the most important aspects of a spearfishing knife is being streamlined.

If you want to step it up and use a purpose made spearfishing knife, this is the one I prefer http://alturl.com/hvxp7 It's very low profile like the skeleton knife, but the handle still allows for a firm grip. The sheath is much thinner than the skeleton knife sheath, it's also flexible and conforms to the inside of the thigh.

Sure it's stainless but is it 316 stainless? Lower quality stainless still corrodes in saltwater....
