The powerhead can be used any way you want either for personal protection and/or fishing. It is everybody's personal preference on how it is used. It is tube shaped about 2-3 cm. wide (depending on the size of bullet inside of it) and is about 10 cm. long. It is put on the end of the spear itself and is activated in 2 different ways:
1. Shooting the spear at the fish like normal. When the powerhead comes in contact with the fish, something sharp (either the speartip or a spring activated firing pin, depending on the type) will push up against the bullet primer and will send a high pressure jet of water followed by the bullet projectile itself through the fish.
2. I have heard of guys who have activated the powerhead simply by poking the speartip, with the powerhead on top, at a shark and detonating it that way as well.
Some spearfishermen use it to reduce the risk of getting killed by the fish they try to spear. I have heard of stories where guys are diving near oil rigs using them. When diving on oil rigs, the water is sometimes over 150m deep but they dive and shoot fish only 30m. deep. When spearing in such conditions it is possible to shoot a large fish like a tuna and be dragged to the bottom or to lose their speargun in the process. Using a powerhead greatly increases you will kill the fish with your first shot. Did this answer your question?
I personally don't use a powerhead although I have seen far more sharks here in Florida than in the Mediterranean. Although I have heard of Great White shark sightings in the Med.
I was in Israel for 10 days in 1998. My ex brother-in-law was an arab-Israeli living in Tira, just north of Tel Aviv. I have worked with several Israeli soldiers and officers who have trained here in the USA at Ft. Benning as well. While there though I didn't have my dive gear with me and never got any deeper than the beach. Good luck! Shalom!!
