2011 Big Bang! Open Contestants

Bring Home The Bacon!

I apologize for the delay in posting the final scores and awards ceremony photos. My main computer's mother board failed after 5 years of solid use and I had to restore work on the presentation I had already began from a terrabyte back-up drive I had luckily used the day before. :(

I am going to try a different approach this year and post the final aggregate scores with winner pics in groups of twenty and intersperse images of the festivities plus sponsor profiles. The logic for the cutoff at twenty in this first thread is because after that ranking level our MC Bill Black begins announcing Mystery Prize winners according to this BBO rule:

MYSTERY PRIZE CHANCES - Everyone who weighs a fish, even just a single fish, will get a single mystery Prize chance designation on the computerized weigh-in list. After the first 20 persons go to the prize table, mystery prize names on the computerized list will be called intermittently. If your name is called, you go to the prize table at that time. This will not affect your regular turn to the table based on your aggregate score, making it possible to go to the prize table twice.

In addition to the top twenty winners, this first thread will also feature the trophy awards for "Largest Fish" and "Best Of."

It is a heck of alot of posting work doing it this way by matching up pics of people and sponsor prizes, but I am hoping this innovative approach to reporting results will be good for participants and sponsors alike.

The top final score winners and for that matter all the contestants really did "bring home the bacon" and have earned some serious congratulations.

The origin of the phrase 'bring home the bacon' is based on the story of a local couple in England who, in 1104, impressed the Prior of Little Dunmow with their marital devotion to the point that he award them a flitch [a side] of bacon. The continuing ritual of couples showing their devotion and winning the prize, to considerable acclaimation by the local populace, is certainly old and well authenticated. Geoffrey Chaucer mentions it in The Wife of Bath's Tale and Prologue, circa 1395.

This first group of the top twenty winners is dominated by an aptly named bacon bringing team called Team Meat. :)

Please be patient if you ranked lower than the first twenty - your post is coming soon. At the end of the scoring and awards process, I will put up the entire list of Final Scores.

The BBO Awards setting is right next to the weigh-in tent in the air-conditioned Newcomb Hall at the Riviera Beach Marina.

Click this thread link to see the weigh-in action: 2011 OFFICIAL Photo Thread - Lifting Lotsa Fish Meat at the Big Bang Open! (http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=129513)

The BBO prize wall really does have over $50,000 worth of prizes.

The Big Bang Open prize wall is easily the biggest around these parts of the spearfishing universe. We go to extensive effort to showcase the wonderful prizes donated by our sponsors. The prize value to contestant ratio is probably the highest anywhere in existence in this sport. There were over 30 spearguns alone, some valued over a grand!

Note to sponsors - if any of your prizes is not shown, they may be designated for the trip report challenge.

Thanks to all the Spearboard sponsors! :notworthy

Chad went with a $6,000 prize from down under.

http://www.spearboard.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=156403&stc=1&d=1312178452

I have been to Australia once in my life and must say the country is wonderful and the people amazing. I was not spearing on that trip back then, so I can only go by reputation that there is some incredible fishing down under.

This has to be a contender for one of the best spearfishing trips in the world. And, we are most fortunate to have it again this year as a major $6,000 prize for the Big Bang! Open. (exchange rates make it more valuable this year than last)

Add to that value the fact the trip is hosted by Seven Time Australian Spearfishing Champion Rob Torelli and you have an absolutely killer spearfishing trip for two divers.

Here are the details from Rob and his company Blue Water Hunting International:

I am keen to help out and the best way l think l can help out is by offering a 3 day Guided Spearfishing Expedition in Southern Australia with myself (Seven time Australian Spearfishing Champion) as guide using my own brand new custom "state of the art" charter vessel.

It would be diving around South Eastern Australia and l could customise the charter to the winners need, i.e. reef or blue water, SCUBA or Freediving, or whatever they liked.

We could target Southern Blue Fin Tuna or Albacore Tuna in the blue water or hunt for monster crayfish, abalone and reef species in shore. (or a combination of both)

Accommodation would be included and transfers, all diving and guides. Basically, all they would need is to arrive in Melbourne and be taken care of from then. Food and drinks would be extra.

It would be open to two divers but not as separate prizes as they would need to use them on the one trip.

I met Rob Torelli at the Blue Wild Expo a couple of years back and found him to be a charming and entertaining character with tantalizing personality. If you are thinking of doing a trip like this on your nickle, I believe there is no one better to be your personal guide spearing down under.

The “MAKO Oceanic ETR” 140 cm (Enclosed Track) Blue Camo Gun with MAKO South African 70M High Capacity Reel Filled with Yellow Spectra line.

Featuring a Fully Enclosed Track with a Twin Rail Barrel, this is the only gun of its kind and BUILT FOR BIG GAME!

The “MAKO Oceanic ETR” was designed by Chad Morris (aka Griswold) and Jeff DeRocher (aka Tin Man), two spearo/designers from the Bayous of Louisiana who spent years designing, machining and fabricating custom spearguns and related underwater hunting gear. Known as “The Bayou Design Team”, Jeff and Chad have built a reputation by combining innovative designs with the latest in high tech material and quality workmanship.

What is an Enclosed Track Railgun (ETR)?
By nature, Railguns are more accurate and more powerful than regular euro guns. This is because of the integrated rail barrel which supports and guides the spear down the rail (barrel) as it exits the gun. This additional support, by the integrated rail reduces “spear whip” and drastically increases accuracy.

The only way to improve upon this would be to incorporate an “Enclosed Track”, the length of the barrel, thereby further increasing accuracy and allowing for enhanced power and virtually eliminating all “spear whip” as the spear exits the gun. With an “Enclosed Track”, the spear is supported not only from the bottom. The spear is also supported by the surrounding walls and partial ceiling offered by the “Enclosed Track”, much like a bullet fired from the barrel of a high powered rifle.

In designing this “Enclosed Track Railgun”, the main challenge for the Bayou Design Team was weight. With the added material of the “Enclosed Track”, the gun had to be light enough so the gun would float (without the shaft), but strong enough, to prevent barrel flex. In experimenting with various designs and materials, the Bayou Design Team came up with the idea of using 2 smaller integrated rails for strength (one on each side) instead of one main rail. By design, this Twin Rail Design (one on each side) would also capture a slide in “Enclosed Track” made of lightweight, yet durable, high density polyethylene.

Essentially, the Bayou Design Team took the MAKO Oceanic Pro Railgun barrel, which is the largest and strongest aluminum barrel on the market and made it even stronger with “Twin Rails” while adding very little weight.

Occasionally seen on larger and heavier custom wood guns, this “Enclosed Track Technology”, incorporated into a much lighter railgun makes the “MAKO Oceanic ETR” the only one of its’ kind. The result…. The most accurate BIG GAME ENCLOSED TRACK RAIL GUN ever built for blue water hunting, inshore hunting and even freeshafting.

Awesome, detailed account of the awards Tony. Congrats to all, competition was stiff. Thanks to all the sponsors including Force E who donated my new regulator!

Yeah Rob!

It took many hours to create this thread and a few phone calls to match divers to pictures, but I think the detail accounting removes any doubts about the superb wealth of that prize wall. However, the quality of the event trumps quantity of prizes or participants any day in my book. I also think Sponsors like seeing their prizes displayed well instead of put in a pile on a table or laid against a wall. The bottom line is everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and that alone makes the intense effort worthwhile. :)

Thanks! Tony

PS -thanking sponsors publically like you just did is a good thing.
There will be many more sponsors to applaud when I do the next rounds of the bacon series.

Thank's Tony for putting on a great event and thanks to all the sponsors. Not only did I win a beautiful enclosed track Mako rail gun, but I also scored a Mako float line to go along with it. Hopefully I'll get to put both to use this weekend.

Was a fun three days for our team and great to see Dylan at such young age take top Junior. Congrats again to Team Meat as well on an impressive performance.
We look forward to next year's tourney.

Thanks Tony for another great show. I enjoyed working/weighing fish with Randy, Branon, Chiung and Steve. I hope I'm on the list for next years BBO. as it was always nice to see who's shooting what and putting a Spear Board name to a face. I'd also like to thank AB Biller for the 54" Floridian speargun. Gonna give it a workout tomorrow. Thanks again and I'll see you at the next tourney.

Is it possible to just put the scores up? I have some buddies that really want to see how they compared against the rest of the field.
