I just got back from a year in Iraq last week and am looking forward to getting back in the water.
I've only lived in CA for a few years total and the wife and I just moved and have only been in Costa Mesa for a few days now. I've never dove N of La Jolla before so I have no clue as to where to go here.
I know that while I was gone there was a lot of stuff going on with the MLPA but I haven't a clue as to what specifically has changed nor do I know any of the restricted or prohibited areas up here, I couldn't get to the beach without directions at this point.
I'll be re-familiarizing myself with the regs and looking on the DFG sites to see where is legal before I dive, but just because an area is legal doesn't mean that it's practically diveable.
So my question to you in the know is, where in general can I go on the average day to kill some fish from a shore dive? How is the viz up here in general and how has it been lately?
I've only got a few months in CA before I'm out of state again for awhile and I have lots of lost time to make up for with the wife so I don't have unlimited amounts of time to dive anymore and would like to make the most of it.
I'm not asking for anyone's honey holes, just general place to go and explore, which is 70% of the fun IMO.
Also, what are some awesome (preferably spearfishing heavy) diveshops in the area?
