View Full Version : Spearfishing Today & Vis Report
Steel Shootin'

First of all, let me tell you that John Hermes shot some serious fish today. He surfaced each time today with a fully weighted stringer. Also, he shot one of the biggest "non middle-grounds" mangos I've seen. When he surfaced, I thought he had plugged a nice red, until he was about 10 feet from the transom and I saw what it was.
We made three dives today off of Port Richey in 85 to 50 feet. The visibility has made a full recovery. On that first dive of 85, I saw bottom when my Suunto showed me at 20ft. I'd say good visability in the range of 30-40'.
The last dive in 50 ft I would call 20-25 ft vis.
My highlight was the last ledge I dove and the three large jew fish. I saw a big eye under the ledge, and thought I had found a rogue 60# grouper. As I was making my way up to it, he came out as if to head-butt me, and went a good 200.
Seas were a steady 2', down to 1' on our last dive closer in. Great conditions and a good time.

John Hermes is a natural born "Fish Killer". Great report!

Nice shooting guys, sounds like a great trip. Glad to hear the vis has returned. I will be out on Saturday (won't everyone?) and am looking forward to being able to see something. :)

Scott pretty much hit the nail on the head with the report. The big Mango you saw there weighed in at just under 6#'s. The surprising thing is the lack of keeper size grouper. Plenty of shorts, but no keepers. Water temp was 83 to 84 degrees, so I don't think we have had enough drop in temp to start the push of fish inshore. No fear though, we are supposed to have our first cold front on Monday.
Also, this was only my second time diving out of Port Richey. It is definetely fishier up there than out of Tierra Verde.

For future reference, the Hermes family learned long ago that, when you compliment John too much, it just goes to his head.
For instance, I know I’m going to hear, “I shouldn’t call it spearfishin’, I should call it spearcatchin’!” and “You envy me and my Rhino!”

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try to out shoot him next time. We gotta keep his ego in check. :D

Good job guys, nice looking catch, filled the cooler nicely.
Got to be an improvement from not being able to see your computer...(but that was a new experience too).
And yea, John does a good job with his SS gun.

Too bad that Jewfish wasn't a gag.

Then again those fish look like they have been copied and edited for size and color. :D Truly nice shooting to the steel slingers.
