Florida Middle Grounds

From: NOAA, 2002

The Florida Middle Grounds is a 1,193 square km area in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, 137 km south of Apalachicola and 129 km northwest of Tarpoon Springs. The bank formations consist of two north-to-northwesterly parallel ridges separated by a valley. Winter temperatures reach 16C limiting many tropical species from occupying these banks. However, there are 23 species of stony corals, 103 species of algae, about 40 sponges, 75 molluscs, 56 decapod crustaceans, 41 polychaetes, 23 echinoderms and 170 species of fish.

Location on Continental Shelf: Mid-Shelf Bank
Coordinates: 28.5oN 84.5oW

Selected Characteristics:
Area of Coverage: 1,193 km2

Community Structure:
Overall, the biotic characteristics of this area are very different from either the Florida Keys or the Flower Garden Banks, located off Texas. The most abundant stony coral species are the elliptical star coral, yellow pencil coral and branching fire coral. Coral cover may be as high as 30% on some reef pinnacles.

Geological Characterization:
The main stratigraphical units are limestone. Carbonate mud, sand and mangrove peat are also present.

Hmmm, that looks to be slightly closer to Cape San Blas than it is to you guys. Wonder if anyone in the Port St Joe area runs any trips down to it. I can be in Port St Joe in 2.5 hrs, Tampa is more like 6 or so.

You don't show your location so it's hard to know where you're at, but try this link. It may be closer to you than Tampa and seems to come highly recommended around here. Never been myself, but reading the stories and seeing the photos, I am looking forward to trying them out someday soon. If you are that close to Port St Joe, this shouldn't be too much further.

I'm in southeast AL, about 2 hrs due north of Panama City. That would be closer. It looks to be fairly close to the Crystal River area, and I'm told that is about 300 miles from here. Just looking at that map, I'd say it's possible for a weekend trip.

Don't go to the MG. You're better off staying inshore. There are no fish in the MG. :)

There's a damb fine charter that leaves out of Steinhatchee. Make sure you've got your advanced diver certification. Be safe and have fun.

The Middle Grounds is not round as shown on that graghic.

The MG is in the middle, as it's name implies. Pretty much the same 75 nautical miles from all coasts.
It's about 35 n.miles long, maybe 12 n.miles at the widest, and slants from the SE to the NW on the 20 fathom line. See the map attached. I don't have a map in my pics file showing Cape San Blas to the MGs.

Of course the north MGs is better accessible to guys in the panhandle and big bend areas of Florida.

The rest of the MGs is about the same run from Clearwater or anywhere to Crystal River, because the west coast of Florida cuts in to the east above Tarpon Springs.

That's the Elbow due west from St Pete on the 30 fathom line.
