I Had a very fun day out in CA. My friend from SD drove to meet me for his first day out in CA freediving. Conditions were slow at first, but some factors I could see were on the edge of changing, and things started to line up. My friend is trailing me in the water watching the first bit of ca diving day.
Im making some drops through the hazy 40ft vis; overcast skies made everything dark this morning underwater. On the bottom at around 70 ft I see a school of black sea bass swimming by ,faster than normal.
The current is picking up I see.... the "bait" was starting to line up pretty thick now through the whole column to the surface.... A few times the entire area would go quiet and scatter for a few seconds.... Is it a sea lion? is it the Blacks? a shark? or hopefully yt...
The half moons blacksmiths and other various smaller fish arised from the edges of visibility and back up to the top water column. I am working the edge of the bait wall, and to my right I see a school of tight packed sardines swim by fast. By now I couldnt ask for anything more, and I vaguely see the yellow tips about 20ft down in the dark, but clearish water.
I dive away from them and swim away from them. Continuing my decent to around 20 ft I slowly turn sideways and start refocusing my energy on the region of fish. I was able to bring them in after a mental battle back and forth. feels good to beat them to it so to speak.
