ok, enlighten a boatless spearfisherman...

where are some decent places to shoot fish within swimming distance of shore? preferably in the middle keys.

i know of a decent place for mangrove snapper on the south end of Bahia Honda bridge (Horseshoe quarry, borrow pit), but what else is there? i've seen tons of fish around the 7mile piling near pigeon key, but can you get to them? i mean do they let you spearfish from pigeon key?

i'm not looking for record fish, just somehting for some fun and some meat for the barbi

One thing I like doing is spearing for sheepshead around docks and pilings along seawalls. In St. Pete, I average about 25-30 lbs of fish in a few hours with a snorkel and mask. Though you don't hear about it so often on this board, sheepshead is a pretty good fish.

sheepshead are great to eat. i agree.

living down in the keys doesn't provide much along the lines of sheepshead. but occasionally you'll find some honey holes of mangroves or hogs
