View Full Version : One day gun build...Mini mid handle in real time
Mr Paul
11-05-2011, 10:01 PM
Im going to start building a new gun tomorrow afternoon, i plan on making a small mid handle dirty water gun, mainly for halibut or for use in less than perfect conditions. The kicker is, im gonna try and make it in one afternoon. I was all set to spend the weekend in a carp fishing tournament, but since it was canceled, im going to start (and hopefully finish) my first winter project.
Here are the specs:
38" teak laminated stock
Deathgrip handle
Neptonics Reef Mech
Neptonics Line anchor
Shaft :cutting down an old bent 9/32 mori flopper shaft
Line guide TBD
Pushrod retainer TBD
This will be an open track short midhandle gun. The handle will only be recessed about 8 or 9 inches, similar to a mid handle plus, but the mech will be mounted like a true midhandle. Im going to try a few new shapes that im thinking which might prevent me from finishing in my short deadline, but its not set in stone that i have to finish by tomorrow anyways. It is also going ot have an epoxy finish, so even if i finish in time, it will take at least an hour to put the gun back together once everything is dry.
Since i'll be doing this in real time, i will be posting pictures with no real discription, then going back and adding text. If i wrote everything out as i did it, id be spending all my time on the computer. Wish me luck, stay tuned...

You shouldn't have any trouble with that time frame for shaping and ruff fit up , epoxy coating and final fitup is a whole differant story . On a simple gun like that, going from a trued blank, ruff milling and shaping normaly takes me about 1-2 hours. But from raw wood to ready to ship fully rigged gun with bands is 20-30 hours and 2-3 hours on the phone and 20-30 emails .

Nice, Im in the process of building a 40" mid handle. Its going to be a winter build so its gonna take a while. Are you going to put a reel on your gun?

I had these old teak hatch covers from when i converted my boat all to starboard, i wasnt ready to throw them away but i wanted to make something cool with them. Because its teak, and because im a little sentimental, i thought id make a gun with whatever material i could from the boat. This teak is old as shit, the boat is a 1989, so its a little weathered. I did my best to plane it and get a few straight enough pieces to lay up my blank. I also used some old marine hardware that i got from Minnies Boat Salvage. Those little pushrod anchors and line anchors are a litle expensive for being almost no material, so i wanted to make mine. I only had today to work on it, so i couldnt get too crazy.

I used the templates i made from my last build. 2 i used the same, 1 i modified and 1 i made completely new. I had an idea of a jig type template so i could make tapered band elevating sides. I had my plethora of gun goodies ready to be cut in. I wanted to try a new idea i had for the pushrod. I saw some small stainless tubing (1/4"OD 1/8" ID) and used it to guide the actual pushrod (1/8"). This way i can tighten down the tubing, and it wont affect the pushrod if the gun swelled in the water. I got an old shaft from my wong hybrid that i shot into the rocks last year. Its shaped line an S at the tip, but the first 46" inches of it was perfect. Slapped a new flopper on it and we're in business.

I've been using my laminate trimmer with most of the cuts. I used the new template i made to shape band guides...I like the square edged type guns, but i wanted this one to be a little different. There's a lot less gun, so i didnt want it to be boring. But i knew if i didnt finish the gun today, this would be the reason.

This is the final shape i came up with. The band guides/wings came out perfect after a few minor changes. I hated the way the muzzle looked, everytime i looked at it i knew there was something wrong. Then i made a ding in the muzzle on the router, and I started re-shaping until i realized that it needed to be straight an narrow in the front. The actual stock is 2 3/4" inches wide, and about 1 3/8" in height.

I made my own epoxy, its a special blend of Epoxy and hardener. Im bottling them in these unique bottles and im gonna make the actual Resin have a blue tint like this. Its the best expoxy finish ive ever used, and everyone should have it. It's seriously so easy to use, I let my 2 1/2 year old Daughter finish Bens gun with it. Ill be naming it "Pauls Epoxy". ;) Its catchy, and i like it.

Hey scott, I just listened to your message. Sorry, I haven't answered my phone all day.
The gun is finished, we just spent 2 hours of 15 minute flips because its so cold outside. No drips in any of the guns, and everything is set up. The coolest part about the finish, is that i found a flaw in the gun that i didnt sand out. It turned out to be a hole of a screw cut in half by the table saw cut, and it made a little fossil mark of a screw in the finish. I like it, I think its a cool reminder of where the teak came from. Everything should be dry by tomorrow and ill finish putting everything together when i get home from work.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a178/EyetypeNaked/49b4ce75.jpg
BTW, Mike made a gun for Ben that that was amazing. It was all Mohaghony, and had the perfect color and finish. Ben, you cant sell this gun. I dont care if your down to your last package of Top Ramen, you can never sell this gun. If you do, Mike and I get to punch you in the face.
Mike also played with epoxy colors and another gun he did turned out really good.

I missed the 2nd page....can't believe you actually had time to epoxy and take pictures as well.
What's the secret in applying epoxy? ...I keep getting bumps in the epoxy...I get what looks like little debris bumps.
Would you mind giving the steps in prepping, brush used, etc in applying Phil's epoxy?
Thanks,
Rob

Its not hard at all, i thought it was going to have trouble with the temperature being so cold, but it still went on smooth. The epoxy is a 2 to 1 ratio, mix really slow so you dont make the bubbles and apply it with a cheap brush. The trick (for me at least) is to hang the gun vertical and flip it every 15 minutes and between coats.
On another note, i dont know if any of you have ever burned teak in your fireplace, but it burns really good and makes the house smell great.

Thanks.
Unfortunately I believe my problem is on the prep of the gun, or dust in the air.
I thought the brush might be leaving debris on the gun, but I believe you are using the same chip brush...that elimates one possibility anyway!

Do you wipe the gun down with paint thinner or acetone before you start applying coats?
Wile E. Coyote
11-07-2011, 02:52 PM
Yes, wipe down with acetone on heavy duty paper towel...was using cotton shop rags, but Phil said there is silicon in the detergent.
Don't have an air compressor to blow of gun though.
Was hoping you may of had similar problems and found the solution.
Thanks again....and sorry about the derail.
