The Lionfish Invasion Marches Onward - Carribean Loop Almost Closed

Sent: Tuesday, January 3, 2012 11:25 AM
Subject: Lionfish Caribbean invasion nearly complete - still need reports from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (together with partners REEF and NOAA) tracks the distribution of lionfish in its invaded range (see links below signature block). At this time, lionfish have invaded the Atlantic coast of the US, parts of the Gulf of Mexico and almost all of the Caribbean. The Caribbean invasion has taken place over several years, and now it appears the "loop" of the Caribbean will soon be closed. Lionfish have recently been documented for the first time from St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Grenada. Only a few islands remain in the Caribbean without lionfish sightings - Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago. To help us maintain the most current map of lionfish distribution, please forward this email to your colleagues in this area. We urge them to report lionfish sightings to either USGS (online at: http://nas.er.usgs.gov/SightingReport.aspx ) or REEF (online at: http://www.reef.org/programs/exotic/report ).
