View Full Version : Jopro Gopro Speargun Mount / Do you trust the doublestick tape on a Gopro mount?

I made a very simple mount for my new Gopro Hero2 to attach to my Rabi tech 120cm.
It's just a single piece of stainless bent into a channel for stiffness.
It's bolted down to the flat top on the butt piece of the handle with three ss #10 screws, washers, and nyloc nuts.
I haven't decided if I'll trust the sticky pad that came with the go pro or rivet or screw the plastic go pro mount to my stainless piece.

The tab that sticks up behind the camera can be bent to hold the camera against recoil or change aim.

Just put a short teather on it just in case.

That tape is really strong. Its the same kind used to attach emblems on cars. With that, J would still tether it with a piece of string as a backup.

yeah either mono or some fishing line. and you can grind down those channels quite a bit. all that 2" vertical plate is going to do is add resistance. it doesnt need to be that tall for rigidity. clean mount though

On my mount the jolt of the bands goin off often pushes the camera to face down. You may need to secure it somehow. The Mako mount just zipties it in place but that seems like a pain in the ass if you are having to switch out sd cards or batteries while on the water.

If you don't trust the tape, you can always drill a hole in the mount and attach the gopro tripod mount. It screws in.

i use a tripod mount and it works great. you might end up not liking that set up as its very far back and will interfere when you load the bands. just saying

I agree with the advice, use a tether and then drop the $7 or what ever to get a proper tripod mount. If you buy the mount and the threaded knob (Mako has it) then you can loosen the knob; rotate the camera 45 degrees and film your buddy etc.
Also, your backing (recoil) flap looks cool, but the camera will recoil off it, I think. I would drill a slot into it or something and then use 2-3 rubber bands to secure the camera to the recoil arm, otherwise it will rebound off the arm and become mis-aligned. You don't need to use zip ties.
Also, incase you haven't heard, you should use a rubber band to secure the latch in the down position because the gun recoil shock tends to open it at depth when there is no tension on it due to water pressure on the back door compressing the gasket.
Can you comfortably load the gun with the camera there?

http://gopro.com/camera-mounts/tripod-mount/ I've got a tripod mount coming to mount the go pro to my 870. I have a 1/4-20 sticking out of the front of the fore end to screw the tripod mount to. It's encased in rubber to help with the shock. Also have a stainless L-bracket for recoil.
Can you comfortably load the gun with the camera there? My bands are on the way, so I don't know yet. The gun has been easy to load in the past.

i know the big part is for recoil, but the rest of the channel probably doesnt need to be that tall. either way it looks good. like some others have said, rubber bands would work well to hold it against the backing plate

Tripod mount...don't trust the tape.

That tape is crazy. The tape will still be holding long after the camera stops working.
But I like to over-engineer all my shit too, so tether it if it gives you peace of mind.

I only use the tape (no tether) for all sorts of applications, has yet to make me believe it could ever fail

Here's the shotty mount...
I had some band tubing on the screw for shock absorbtion but the camera jiggled to much.
Now it's on a much shorter screw with rubber washers for a bushing.

I haven't seen if fail diving...but I have seen it fail A LOT in moto applications. One or two end up in the lost & found nearly every race in my area. Granted this is far more of a beating than any spearo use would inflict.

Here's a boring video of the mount test.
I've tightened it up a bit.
I can use a zip tie but it seems to be tight enough if you use a screw driver on the phillips head inside the thumbscrew knob

Also I found a 2 x zoom lens for the camera.
Not useful under water but could be nice for some out of the water stuff.
I used the 1080 setting with the narrowest field of view.
The quality is poor, this is from a screen capture, from a video, in dim light, at twilight.
but it shows the difference in size.
The second half of the video is with the zoom if you want to check quality.

Joe, I would not be worried as much about the tape as I would the butt piece busting off. That butt piece is very thin and actually kind of brittle on that gun.
