Date: 3/08/03
Boat: 25 SeaVee
Capt: Jimmy
Crew: Bubblejunkie, Merk, SeaStalker
Weather: 10-15 knot wind
Sea's 1-2 with a swell building
Port: Sebastion Inlet
water temp 70's
vis 15-20
Dive 1: Bubblejunkie and SeaStalker: 35 foot broken ledge. Vis was about 10 feet and the ledge was full of grass. Looked around for 20 minutes without so much as seeing a bug of fish worth pulling the trigger. Hear a boat buzzing us, assume it was our boat picking Bubblejunkie up so I figured he was bailing. Surface and find Bubblejunkie already in the boat...some weekend warriors flew up to the boat and asked if we had divers down?......Merk pointed to the flag fling high and gave "you dumbass look" ....I enter the boat with a bone....Bubblejunkie dumps his bag with 3 bugs all 5lbs and a go.
Dive 2: Jimmy and Merk hit another broken ledge 1/2 mile away. Jimmy surfaces with 6 bugs but one is short. Merk surfaces with the same bone I had.....man we are starting to get a little embarrassed.
Dive 3 Merk and I drop with 1500 psi on a ledge we pass in route to next spot......we find 3 three "hotel's" full of bugs.....problem....it must have been kids camp because there was not a legal one among them in three separate hotels. I manage a nice mango and pass on a few questionable gags.
Dive 4 Bubblejunkie and Jimmy drop on a small break in 40 feet. 30 minutes later both surface with full bags. Jimmy pulls 4 but two are short and returned unharmed. Bubblejunkie has a nice 20plus gag stuffed in his bag along with 3 bugs although one is short and also returned.
Dive 5 Merk and SeaStalker. Ledge in 45 feet. We drop down I go left Merk goes right. Find a nice 6 pound bug right off, bag him and move 5 feet, see three nice gags all over 25 pounds. Hit the first one that goes into a tail dance as I make my way up the line the shaft pulls...Damn my fault shooting a line gun with one band.....Regroup and figured he will be holed up. I'll catch up to him later....no such luck, ledge ends and I start working my way back when 2 more gags returned, this time I have two bands loaded and shaft makes full penetration. Bag the grouper (no stringer since we were bug hunting) the 30lb gag does not fit in the bag and the tail sticks out as I close it......I continue working my way hoping to dig out the earlier shot grouper. I look deep in all the caves/undercuts and I see a nose and eye of what looks to be a SEAL's board leader and personal best grouper/cabera. I line the gun up...(edited version) oh damn it's a 75-100 pounds jewfish. Merk also surf! aces with a respectable 8-10 lb ga g.
Dive 6: Bubblejunkie, Merk and Seastalker (Jimmy bails on last dive) Small break in 42 feet. As luck has it Bubblejunkie drops in the perfect spot and finds two nice bugs I start right but the break ends. I go left and Merk is elbow deep with both arms pulling a nice 6 pounder out, I offer a quick assist and he gets the bug bagged. We continue on only to come to an end of the break. Turn and there is Bubblejunkie on are tails.....he passes us at warp speed to return to the original spot we started, apparently he left one in the hole he was going to claim. Merk moves on top the break working small cracks and I start following the bluerunners hoping to pic the break back up. Luckily I picked the break back up and find a nice little opening and pull all 6 bugs. Nothing big but all respectable
totals for the day:
23 bugs up to 7 pounds
3 gags to 30lbs
2 small red grouper
5 go's to 6 pounds
Jimmy and Bubblejunkie thanks for the invitation we had a good time. If anyone ever wondered about a SeeVee, it's ride is very similar to the Contender. No pounding and soft landings.
