Looking to buy my first bow. Have done lots of reading and am ready to go hit up some shops and try them out. Plan to drive down to Sac on Monday and would like to know if anyone recommends any shops.
Also, any recommendations for specific bows to look for. Probably have a max of 550 to spend, although I don't have to spend it all. I just want a well made bow that I can learn with.
Thanks.

There used to be an awsome archery shop in Sacto, but sadly, they went out of business. There's probably a few new ones I'm not aware of though. There's a good, but expensive, shop up above Auburn that a friend uses. I can get the name for you if you'd like.
The thing with compound bows, like many things, is that you really need to shoot a few before you buy. What your research might tell you is the perfect bow, my not feel right to you, and that's important.
I know Sportsman's Warehouse in Auburn, and Cabelas up my way, will let you shoot their bows at their indoor ranges. Sportsman's is where a buddy of mine bought his bow after test firing many.
When you say $550 max, is that for just the bare bow, or fully rigged? If you're talking 550 for a bow, rest, sights, etc., you're gonna be limited to low or close to low end.

Yeah, the reading I did concluded that the best way to chose one was to shoot many of them. As far as price, I don't mind getting a bare bow and adding components to it.
I want to put some work in on Monday getting a feel for as many bows as I can and comparing prices. We will see where it goes from there.

Sounds like you're pretty dialed in. What I and most of my friends have found is that once you've narrowed it to a price range, you'll shoot several bows and then you'll shoot one that just makes you go, "ahh", and it probably won't be the one you would have picked first.
Have fun!

Okay, so I have put off a trip to give my local shop a chance. Went in and shot a few in their closet! Really great salesman, very informative and not pushy.
We are leaning towards a 2011 PSE Brute. I feel very comfortable with the bow and the price. Want to run through the price and the accessories and see what yall think.
2011 Brute: 359.99
Sight - Punisher 5 39.99
Rest - Kill Shot 54.99
Bow Sling - HDWD HD 9.99
Quiver - Mongoose IF 29.99
Stabilizer - Flexxtech 5" 22.99
Peep - Mongoose 1/8" 6.99
Release - Hurricane Extreme
w/ Buckle Strap 44.99
Arrows - ICS Bowhunter
340 4" Van - 6 arrows 39.99
Misc (peep tubing, string loop, field tips)
Total 613.59 + tax (real total of 661.14)
What do you think? Keep in mind Sac or Bay area are 2 -3 hours away for me. I don't mind paying an extra 50 -75 to keep business local. I searched for prices on all the accessories online and found the prices at the shop to be comparable. I might try to haggle them down to about 625 out the door since my buddy is buying one at the same time.
