I just got my Hero 2 and I havent had it in the water yet. Im trying to figure out the best way to wear it. should I use the headstrap under my hood or should I buy a helmet and if so what is the best kind to use? Im trying not to mount it to my gun so I can video my buddies a little easier without having to point my gun at them. Thanks for the ideas in advance.

I have no problem with the headstrap under my hood. I know some guys dont like the extra "drag" it causes when freediving but i honestly dont even notice it when I have it up there. With the hood over top of the strap I dont worry about it falling off either. A helmet it probably fine and Ive seen guys wear them but if you can just use the strap then why go through all the trouble of wearing a bulky helmet.

I shot this entire video with a go pro and all the UW footage is with the headstrap.

Can you without having to drill through your mask?

not really...i know a lot of guys have their usual mask that they like diving in and then either the same one or something similar thats rigged for the go pro. That way if you dont feel like filming one day, you still have your go to mask.

Regardless of wearing a hood or not, I didn't like the head strap. It kept slipping and the band wants to sit in same place of mask. I decided to go with a helmet for ease of wear and additional head protection diving around underwater obstructions. I went with a kayak helmet that I bought from REI for $40. It has minimal padding that is neoprene type. I simply drilled a hole and screwed a bolt through to attach camera to (see pictures). Works great.

If you go with a helmet just make sure that it isn't foam type of padding, which is very bouyant and will compress/crush at depth. This foam will only crush and does not re-expand upon surfacing.

Ursus, What model-manufacturer helmet did you buy? I looked on REI and cannot find a category for kayaking helmets. Thanks.

Thats an awesome idea. Does the helmet effect your bouyancy at all or is it light enough it doesnt matter?
