So I originally asked abpark ranger who told me to call lapd who told me to call dfg who told me to call park rangers who told me to call lapd. I figure a lot of you know regs better than the actual enforcers anyway so ill ask here. In Los Angeles when hiking on trails it is illegal to carry a firearm. I asked the ranger what about an air rifle. he told me he wasn't sure if that constitute a firearm and to ask lapd. I gave them a ring and they said no it does not constitute a firearm. so I asked if I could shoot rabbit while I'm out on a trail. they told me that I would have to ask dfg. I asked dfg and they said rabbit you can not shoot with a rifle or pistol of any kind in Los Angeles county (you have to use a shotgun) wtf? but squirrel are legal. but they told me to check parks and rec and see if it was aloud to carry an air rifle because they thought you weren't aloud. well I asked the p&r guys and they said Airsoftguns are illegal as well as paintball guns. and firearms I told them that lapd does not consider air rifles to be a firearm nor are air rifles an Airsoft gun. they told me that I should check with lapd againand that it would be up to whoever was giving me a ticket to decide if what I was carrying was a firearm

I didn't think it would be this hard to get an answer from people whosejob idt is to know these things. so does anyone here know the legality of varying an air rifle on atrail and shooting small game with it (in an area where you are aloud to take game). everyone told me I was in a grey area

please read all aloud as allowed* autocorrect is killing me today

My first question is: do you have a hunting license?

Why do you want to shoot rabbits in a park? Are you going to eat them, or is it just for the fun of killing something?

And the second question is. Is it a state park which no weapons at all are allowed even if you do have a hunting license.

yes I have a hunting license. yes I eat what I kill. if I just wanted to kill a rabbit for the fun of it I do work at a pet store and it would be a lot simpler to do there then actually going out and looking for them and working for a meal. and no it's not a state patlrk but it is off of trails that are patrolled by rangers.

interesting... I would not do this in day time. LA is not a gun friendly place and even if you are legal to walk around outside with a gun in LA county is not the best move.

here is a fictional story for you to consider:

actually I used to shoot rabbits all the time in Irvine and industrial costa mesa. Do it under the cover of darkness. We shot them from cars in residential neighborhoods after 10pm. Roll down the window, take the shot, pull away as if nothing happened. Probably took down close to 100 rabbits over the years and didn't get caught once!

How about using a slingshot? I killed one this summer with a slingshot... I had to finish it off by running it over though :(

And no I don't eat them and I really don't give a cottontail about what you think of it, it's the same as killing a mackerel to me.

In the national forest land you typically have to be 150 yds from a trail or a road and you can not shoot across bodies of water among other things but that was in santa barbara. I would assume you might have to have barnes rounds or another non lead ammunition I am sure someone will know the answer.

If you wanna thump some bunnies, go to a place you know is legal and have at it. Or, learn to play very dumb when you get caught at a place that it might not be...

Either way, have at it...

Yes!

Q, why don't you find the rangers where you go hiking and ask them? Say "the LAPD doesn't consider it to be a fire arm, and I have my hunting license but I'm not sure of the regs for rabbits. I know squirrels are okay to shoot, but what about rabbits?" Don't say anything about that shotgun part, just see what that ranger says, take his contact card/name so that way if he says yes and you get caught you can cover your tracks as much as you can.

I BARELY talked a park ranger out of giving me a ticket for my son shooting his little flimsy kids version of a bow and arrow (he was 4!) because it was a "weapon". We were in a state park campground. That bow would not break the skin at an arrow's lenght away from you..plus it had no point.

Nearest other camper was 5 or 6 sites away, we were shooting into a 500' high cliff side...in other words about as safe as a pillow factory. Any resonable person would use basic human judgement and say its a toy. The wonderful ranger's argument was that it would lead to others bringing weapons into the park because they see my son shooting it....COME ON!

If that gives you an idea of how rediculous our great state is with this stuff....then go ahead and shoot rabbits in a park.

I think that was the most incredible restrain on my part to give all the required "yes sir, so sir" responses to get out of that one. I was so mad that this guy made my son feel like he was responsible for doing something wrong that I was bout to throttle him. My kid was really bothered that the guy in the uniform was "mad" at him.

We are living in a nation of pansies, and its getting worse.

Can you tell I get fired up still....?:gun:
