I've been in twice since March 8th. Going again this weekend hopefully. I haven't seen a need for a gun yet.

Season starts when someone starts landing fish. Usually a bunch of us will be whacking Tog right after the first reports come in. Although I know this spot that might be holding some fish ... tomorrow will tell.

Usually 60+ and structure they can hole up in. When the water hits the high 40's they start cruising back in shallow, by 50 they are here! And Newport is 49... too bad RI doesn't open for 3 more weeks.

Dove Newport yesterday, water was 48-49. Not a fish in sight, no bait, no small tog, no school stripers, nada.

Anyday now they will be here

Scott, this is just like deer hunting - find the food, you'll find the fish.

Went last Wednesday. Drove to Newport... fogged in... so... Drove back to CT and splashed the yak. Tested out the new rudder and rigging... tits. Did a few dives. (BTW I would like to tongue the inventor of 7mm suits) Ahem... I saw a couple baby groggy togs way back in holes and some small cunner. It was enough to make you cry as a sign from God that soon we will be killing delicious fishes. Great viz too. Couple more weeks dudes.

I'm looking but with the warm temp I really thought I would see some life out there. I only dove one spot so I guess that doesn't mean much , they could have been right around the next bend laughing at me :D

Went yesterday, saw a few Togs, but 1. The season is not opened. 2. They were skittish and I wanted bass. Water temperature was 45 degrees at the surface, deeper than 28 -30 feet felt much colder. Upper bay 51 plus degrees!

By the middle of April the first bass will fall.
