Hey Guys,
I currently have a JBL Woody Magnum with a 48" shaft and break away tip. I am using the shaft that came with the gun. Do you guys recommend that I get a thicker and longer shaft? I would like to hear the opinion from somebody who is familiar with shooting the woody magnum.

I shoot a woody mag and also 48biller. that stock jbl shaft is way too slow!I only use 60'' stinger style with my jbl much much faster.I'll never use the stock shaft tip combo again.on my biller I like to use a hybrid shaft and ss line kit for diggin and hole shootin.

My old gun was a Woody Magnum and I used it for a few years. JBL guns don't take Biller shafts, had to order mine through Tackle Shack to get them.

The breakaway tip that came with it was nice, but it was a pain in the ass and I ditched it for a regular tip. When I finally got a real freeshaft for it, there was a huge difference. Get a 60" freeshaft and you won't regret it.

I've played around with the idea of getting a freeshaft for a long time now. But just as I am about to go freeshaft, I spear a fish where I think to myself, "Thank God I had a line on that shaft otherwise I would have lost that one." Last December, I almost lost a lineshaft to the queen mother of all AJ's (for once I prayed that a fish would get off my shaft as it was dragging me deeper than I wanted to) and that was after I hit it 2 inches behind the eyes. I know. . . I know Master Yoda, if this young padowan expects to progress in his jedi powers he must go free shaft. I guess I will get that freeshaft this weekend. I know of a LDS that keeps them JBL shafts in stock. I guess it is about time I start losing some shafts.

What about the idea of staying lineshaft but increasing to 60"?

What Fiz said... I've got a 48 biller that I use a 60" stinger shaft with. MUCH faster to reload and can screw the PH on in seconds.

Depends on what you're shooting at too. For an AJ, I'd think lineshaft is a minimum requirement, and a PH if you don't feel like getting beat to death. But for just about anything else around here, it seems everyone freeshafts. You'll lose more shafts, but you'll kill many more fishies, too!

And by the way, what LDS keeps JBL shafts in stock? I know Tackle Shack will order them for you at no extra charge, but they really don't keep anything on hand.

If your thinking of getting a thicker and longer shaft your out of your mind. First off the biller and jbl come with shafts that are already to thick, there rnge is terrible. I would recomend ging with a 6.5 or 7 millimeter shaft with a hawain tip you'll increase your range tremendously. Remember the longer and thicker you go the less range you have. Granted you'll have more inertia behind it but here ohh florida fish don't reach the 250lb range very often. Also get rid of that icepick tip. your shaft is dropping way too much not to mention the range your loosing. I use a rob allen 140cm with a 6 mil shaft and have about 20 feet of range from the tip to fish.

i was just at rays house last night. it's like being a kid in a candy shop. my dad and my dive buddie (intowin) aka the shark attack guy, went over to his place to modify their guns and get set up for an upcomming middle grounds trip. he's got shafts for every style of gun and at a great price. he's also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. if you live in the tampa area i highly recomend stopping by to pick up equipment.

Somebody told me they bought a shaft from him and it rusted out after the first dive. Has this happened to anybody else? I question the validity of this story.

i've used his shafts for 5 months now and they don't have a bit of rust on em. i guess if you leave them submerged for months they might not look to good but mine are in excellent shape.
