Reel setup question!

Should I still use the shock cord/ bungie or just connect the reel line straight to the mono?

I would just connect the reel line to the mono.

With your mono shooting line connected to the gun, you need that bungee to absorb shock and take up slack when its loaded. But with a reel, the drag should be set so that a fish can take line, so there won't be any shock to absorb, and you can take up any slack after loading by reeling line onto the reel.

I dislike the set up bill posed because of a couple reasons.

First off slack shooting line can be really annoying, loud and can be in the way. If you have the reel connected straight to the shooting line and you bump the reel, the shooting line can become slack.

Second i like my reel line to go through a line guide at the muzzle. With this set up that is not possible.

My suggestion would be to run the shooing line to a piece of bungee or a shock cord and have that rigged hawaiian break away style. Then run the reel line from the reel through the line anchor and then down to the shock cord that is connected to the line release. Make sure to run the reel line though the line anchor before putting the shooting line on it or you will have a big tangle. I'm sure bill has a picture of that set up somewhere on his computer as i have seen it before on one of his posts.

Ya a picture would really help. I have it connected straight to the shooting line right now and I find it really hard I keep the line tight. The only way is to have the reel drag real tight.

I don't understand the concern about slack line. I just set the drag tight enough to keep the slack out, and its still plenty loose enough to let a fish run, although I usually do loosen it after shooting a fish. Actually, I should say "did" loosen it since I'm using a breakaway float line now.

Also, I much preferred not running the line through the line anchor, but to each his own.
