Maori hook is always a good choice. Also the silhouette of a free diver with a gun would be good as well. Or you could just get a big mermaid put on your back, that would be cool as hell.

You still have 3 years before you can legally get one, so what's the rush? Why don't you wait until you're at least old enough to get one before you start thinking about it? I'm telling you right now, you're going to think something is totally cool and get it. Then, a few years later, you're going to be thinking, "What the hell did I get this for"? and get it covered up. Or worse, removed. Which is worse than getting one.

I'm getting a free diver silhouette done on my right calf at the end of the season.
a quick search of "spearfishing tattoo" on google shows I'm not the first, and definitely not the last. I'm psyched though it should look cool.

Ahhh so that photo in your avatar is not a picture of your son, it is YOU :bang: ...Let me just say this, if you have to ask someone what you kind of tattoo you should get, you dont need to get one.

hate to sound condescending to you but you're 15 years old...well here is my unsolicited advice. tattoo is a pretty serious decision.. my buddy just got his burned off yesterday...not pleasant... you will be a different person 2, 4, 8, 10 years from now and who knows what your hobby/image will be.
i never had the desire to get one so take my internet option with a grain of salt...but young people+ tattoos to me seems like it would end in regret.

A lot of good advice here. I have about 80 hours of tattooing. The best advice I can give you is
1.) wait until you are atleast in your mid to late 20's. The only tattoo I got when I was a teenager was lasered off. I started getting good tattoos by world class artists in my late 20's throughout my 30's.
2.) don't get trendy or "kid" tattoos.
3.) save your money and get tattoos by well known artists. Never skim on a tattoo.

IMO a tattoo represents something that holds such unique significance in your journey that you want it permanently etched onto your body forever. You need to ask yourself what in your journey so far is so unique to you and holds such significance to you.
So, asking others about cool ideas about what you should have tattooed on your body means your still looking for that unique significant thing. Keep looking, you'll know it when you experience it and will need no ones opinion.

Personally I think a tattoo of a giant penis on your forhead would be something awesome that you would never regret.

As a practical suggestion that holds up over time get a small font SSN or name under the armpit or on the underside of your foot.
It makes the body ID a lot easier to identify and return to your family after a few days submerged, or just get an RFID electronic ID rice grain (AKA "dog chip") installed in your forearm.

Wait. Like everybody else has suggested. I'd have one now if I wasn't worried that I may change my mind later (although the one I have in mind holds pretty significant meaning and I like alot).
An example of why to wait: A kid in my graduating class went to Peru for a school trip recently, there's a soda down there called Inca Cola. He came back, and spent $100 to have an Inca Cola bottle tattooed on his thigh. It looks cheap, it was a stupid idea, and 3 weeks later he already regrets it. Don't be that guy.

I had it in my mind for 10 yrs before i actually inoed it. It was natural when the time came and i dont regret it cause it represents a lot to me. It is somehow abstract and the meaning is in me, so no defined shapes that i might not like in time!
Give it time and thought and the idea will come, drop it for a while and it will come back improved!

You are commiting the number one rule against getting a tattoo. You are asking people for designs. When you get a tattoo you come up with what you wnat and then you and your artist put the concept on skin. I agree with everyone on this board a tattoo is very personal and should mean something to you. You wil change, your hobbies will change, your passions will change. Crap the only Tattoo I have I got it 10 years after the event that made me get it. I have the olympic rings in the back and that is one of my biggest accomplishments in my life. I could have gotten it when I was 21. But I waited till I was 31 to get it done..

Don't want to derail but I'm curious, what event? IMO that's the type of thing that's worthy of being on you for the rest of your life.

I wish all you guys were around when I was growing up... I could have used some good advice. You kids on here should know it's OKAY to listen to people with more experience than yourselves. Acknowledging that you actually learned something is ALRIGHT, It's NOT a sign of weakness.
Think of it as an easy way to get ahead.

I been getting tatted since I was 17, I'm now 30. N let me tell u all the tatt I got from 17 till my 20's been mostly redone... So, what u think is bad ass when ur young is a lil different when u get older.
My 1st tatt was 18hrs long water dragon in the mid 90's ... Shit got play out quick..

My 2 cents....
I love tattoos, I'm 42 and I have many hours of work including a Japanese style sleeve. That being said, wait my young friend. My first tat was at 18, I got it covered up later.
It's been said already by others but I'll say it again, you have no idea how many exciting changes and experiences in life you have ahead of you and you never know where you'll end up. I didn't start getting lots of ink until my 40's. I'd finished college, married, had kids and had established my career. Plus I'm an old fart (compared to you) so I pretty much know what I like and don't like at this point.
Get the mother of all spearfishing tats...in 10 years. For now, just realize you are about to go through the most awesome and dynamic years of your life, you might not want to do anything permanent right now because trust me, you will be a very different person in ten or fifteen years.

:up:Such very good and honest replies! Get a tattoo that represents you but before you get something thats permanent make sure you understand what your about. Change is part of life and people change like the currents in the ocean. So make sure you choose wisely and understand what your doing.

I got my first when I was 17 and don't regret it.
But here is my advice, don't get anything you aren't very passionate about. If you want to get something about spearfishing, maybe don't until you have been diving for at least several years. You may not do it forever. The way I always felt about my tattoos (at least the more recent ones) is I have to want it for at least 2 years, then if I still want it as badly as when I first thought of the idea then maybe it's worth it. But at 15 there's going to be dozens of things that you're gonna go "oh this is so rad, i love it i love it, i wanna do this forever", but realistically you probably won't think those things are cool in say twenty years... And the problem is when you're young you don't think about 20 years down the line like you will when you're a little older. I'm only 27 right now and it's still hard for me to have the foresight into twenty years from now, but I'm getting better.
Good luck. Hope this helps. I am in no way talking you out of it, I'm just saying make sure you truly love whatever you want to get tattooed, because it's gonna be on there FOREVER.

I was thinking of getting a tattoo of some sort of fish for a while now. The problem is figuring out what type of fish i should get to fit my idea. The idea was to get a picture of a fish, expect leave the body blank. I would add a single scale each time i killed that partucular fish. Combining some sort of artistic flare with a running body count.
Just tossing ideas out there....

Something to think about -
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - As the job market gets more competitive, employers are hesitating to hire tattooed job candidates.
Tattoos are pretty mainstream. Over a quarter of Americans between 18 and 50 years old have them. But one valley woman who calls her tattoo a teenage mistake is now trying to remove it.
Tattoo removal procedures are now a lucrative business.
Tattooing your body may seem like a good idea at some point, but more Americans are regretting their body art.
New reports say people sporting tattoos are struggling to land a job.
"If I wear long sleeves, my tattoo peeks through, wondering how many more I have," says 25-year-old Antoinette Marshall, who is hunting for a job.
Marshall has plenty of tats on her legs, even behind her ears. But all this ink can be hidden by her clothes.
It's one on her wrist -- a heart and a star she got as a teenager -- that is turning off employers as she interviews for corporate jobs.
"It's associated with a bad group of people for most part," says Marshall.
Job seekers like Marshall are turning to tattoo removal venues like Scottsdale's National Laser Institute.
"Since the recession I'd say my business has really boomed," says Shelley Cook, Laser Tattoo Removal Specialist.
One study says tattoo removal procedures have increased by 32 percent in the past year.
People are willing to shell out hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars for the painful procedure, just to erase their mistakes and compete in the tough job market -- where employers might opt for the more clean-cut professional.
"If they can openly see something that is not appealing you are automatically crossed off the list," says Marshall.
Folks at the National Laser Institute say the majority of people coming through the door are getting the procedure in order to find employment.

One of my favorite all time quotes is, "scars are tattoo's with better stories". Live the life you want, don't waste time looking like you do...
Unless it is something extremely close to your heart, don't get it.
But then again some of my good buddies have tons of ink and it is "them", it isn't "me". But I am almost midway through my 30's and for all I know I will get some ink later in life, but for the past 34 years it hasn't even been a consideration.

Tattoos don't automatically make you bad ass.
make the right decision and don't get one now, wait till you really want one.
That's debatable, haha.
I have a pretty stupid tattoo(awesome in my mind!) of the evil monkey from family guy, I don't regret that one, it always makes me and other people laugh. I think I was 20 when I got my first one. I don't regret it, but I have added onto it about 3 times to get it to where it is now. I've always waited and thought out my ideas for months before I finally went to the artist. Just make sure whatever it is, it means something to you. If you're unsure, take your ideas to an artist and see if they can come up with something you might not have thought of.... and then think about it some more.
When looking for an artist try to find someone with experience with the type of tat you want. I've seen some fish, faces, animals or whatever else end up looking like bad cartoons and they weren't supposed to look like cartoons.
Lastly, don't be embarrassed if it is you and not your friend who wants the tattoo, there isn't anything wrong with wanting a tat at 15(getting one at 15 is questionable IMO). There will always be someone to criticize you for having tattoos, regardless of your age, or even what kind of tattoo it is. Finding someone that hates tattoos is sometimes easier than finding a racist. You have to be ready to own it.

My uncle waited till he was in his 60's before he got one, a big American flag and bald eagle on his shoulder. It pissed a lot of people off.
I may get full sleeves around the same age.
