Whats up everyone! :D
Just got back from a week down south. Went down with my wife and youngest son. I have not been going down as often as in the past and was really itching to get down there. Left on friday in the morning and had an easy drive down. Stopped by the Baja Mar in San Felipe on the way down to have some fried squid strips and shrimp tacos (and a beer) and get my head straight.
Made it to the house in the afternoon. The bad news was that my place had been broken into about 3 weeks earlier. My brother had already gone down and fixed alot of the problems but it kind of sucked to see the damage first hand. There are few things more destructive than a drug addict with a crowbar. Anyways I went on the plan of going all generator this time. Normally its solar but with all my batteries, and charge controllers gone that was not going to happen. Used a 3000w honda ex for a week, super quiet and only ate 10 gallons of gas the entire week. It ran non-stop. So power and everything was great.
Went fishing with my son on saturday in the Kayak. It was kind of windy but when it died down for a little bit we went out. The water was kind of messed up from the wind so fishing was slow, nothing big enough to keep and only two of them. Then out about 100 yards I see a whale shark swimming. I tell my kid to paddle and we head out and intercept it. It was about 20 ft long and very curious. When you just hang out with them and dont touch them they will swim at you just to see whats up. This one came up to the Kayak to see what was goin on. It nudged the bottom of the kayak, but for a 20 ft shark it took the kayak out of the water about 6 inches. The sound that came out of my kid when he realized that the thing was going to contact the bottom of our little kayak was priceless! We hung around with the shark for about 20 min then came back in. We ate chicken that night....

This is not a pic of the actual whale shark I saw, this is another time. I had no camera with me in the kayak but it looked pretty much like this.
Day 3 sunday. We went triggerfish hunting down the coast a little. Tough vis but managed to nail a triggerfish and then picked some scallops from my buddy Naty at his house. He had found a new spot where he could get scallops at low tide. That night we had triggerfish and scallops.
BAD LINK
Day 4 Monday. Woke up to greasy flat calm water, the kind of water that makes you squeal a little bit when you see it. I was in a hurry to get on the water cause it had been a while since I had taken my youngest kid to the islands. got on the water about 8:30. Flat calm the entire way out. full throttle no bouncing. Hit up my favorite spots and got skunked!! Out of 5 of my spots only one was holding and they were all small. I had been humbled but the sea of cortez again. My kid managed to shoot a small barred grunt and I got a small grouper, snapper, barred grunt, and a burrito grunt. By then Im gettin cold and frustrated that all my good spots are empty today.
With the water still flat I headed back to the house.
Started heading north and as soon as I got north of Huerfanito Island I was hot stopped by PROFEPA. When I say hot stopped I mean I was going full throttle and they came out of the horizon in an intersecting path at full throttle. At first I didnt know who it was cause they were coming in straight at me and I couldnt identify the boat. I just kept the throttle on and began to turn away from them and they decided to hit their strobe on me. I then realized that it was a govt boat of some kind. Redirected my course to them and throttled down and they turned off their lights and also throttled down and approached me. They checked my operators license, my boat MAT permit number, scanned my boat chip, checked my wife and kids license and then took a picture of my 4 small fish. Then they wrote down my name to log me in as operating for that day. I told them that I was not working and they said it was cool. They were very professional and polite and didnt address my wife or child only me. After finishing their inspection they told me that they would be seeing me later and to have a nice rest of the day, and then headed south. I went north.
That night had fried fish tacos. Barred grunt rolled in crushed cornflakes:toast:
Left the next day around 1pm.
There are 5 different major road construction sections on the way to Puertecitos, that you will be on the dirt for a few miles each. Border wait sucked like always, they have half of the tourist crossing in Mexicali (the new crossing) blocked off and for SENTRI or FASTPAS. If you dont have an electronic document with a chip you are down to 3 lanes total and they are SLOW. Im going to get the passport ID card cause it has the chip, also the mexico passport card that they issue also has the chip. That lane went way faster.
Water Temp : I dove with no wetsuit, but ended up getting cold by the end of the day so go with a 3 or a 1, its only gettin warmer.
Vis: 10-15 ft where I was.
Ive been checking this website Magicseaweed.com for wind reports and its been pretty accurate. If your going to go down I would recommend checking this site. If its any other color than blue dont go, your wasting your time unless you like sandstorms.
Batteries are dead in the camera right now but I will post up some pics later. Im going to run 4 day trips this year, 2 days of diving, $500 per person for the 4 day trip. I will be checking for wind reports and planning my trips on a 3 week notice based on conditions. PM me if you want to get on a call list.
