MIAMI-- Police say two teens were trying to reload a spear gun when it fired, striking a 16-year-old in the forehead.

The Miami Herald reports the boy was conscious Thursday afternoon when he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Miami-Dade police say the teen and his 15-year-old friend were hanging out at a lake when the gun fired.

Police say the incident appears to be an accident.

There was no further word on the teen's condition.

So many people seem to forget that these things are deadly weapons, and should be treated as such.

Hope the kid is ok.

I think we should remove the warning labels from everything and let the dumb people kill them selves off.

Spearguns don't shoot people in the forehead, teenagers do. Maybe they should ban teenagers. Or at least make them wear warning labels.

YES!! lets ban teenagers....

I feel sorry for kids nowadays when they see a toy on tv they want but can't have because their parents have to be 18 years of age or older to order...

I think it is legal to shoot the stupid, as long as the shooter is also stupid. I doubt any charges will be brought up in this incident.

Kid: "Doctor, I have this stabbing pain in my head."

Doctor: "Yeah, I had a grouper in here last week with the same complaint, and he didn't survive."

After spearing his quarry, it looks like he was unable to get him on the stringer. Bummer when one gets away like that. Those ambulance drivers are just like the tax man - stealing another guys fish!

Someone has a spear gun shaft in their forehead, which may or may not debilitate them for the rest of their life. Whether is was stupidity, immaturity or just an accident, I dont think the spear fishing community should be poking fun of and condemning this kid the way the majority of you all are here so far. As far as you all know, this teenager could be a member of the forums here.

Many of you are showing the same level of maturity as the teenager involved in the accident. I can only hope that you all never have an accident that threatens your life one day.

Relax. We all understand the seriousness of the matter and have full sympathy for the injured. Sometimes humor is the way you process events that are difficult and painful - it's just a way to cope and respond. Nobody wishes this kid ill. We all want him to recover quickly and fully.

Hopefully someone got it on video! I'm pretty sure it didn't hit any of the kids brain or it's 3 functioning cells

Didn't the last teenager shoot his buddy in the ass while being towed in tandem behind a boat?

I have to agree with you. I was surprised by many of the responses. Not to mention, the victim may not have been at fault. My buddy got shot in the arm with a speargun a few years ago, and I caught all kinds of hell for making light of it.

JFJF if there is an ass to kiss your nose will be the first one buried in it... I grew up around weapons and spear guns, I just wasn't ever stupid enough to have an "accident" with any of them. A, because I have a good, healthy, functioning brain and B, because I knew they were nothing to play around with. What's lacking in this day and age is accountability. There should be a first grade class on it. Even if you weren't the dumb ass in this case hanging around with dumb asses is just as bad... and the parents... just can't keep up with what way cool is doing playing with spear guns? One of my favorite quotes from a good book: "Bad company breeds bad character" and "There's a price that comes with stupid"...

Anyone curious as to why they were spearfishing at a LAKE?

I'm sure it'll make for a good story when he gets out of the hospital

I think many spearos can be quilty of unsafe practices at times..A speargun loaded on the surface and shot accidentally will reach the stretch of your line and come back at ya and not from the tip end. they are meant for underwater shooting only.

I can't believe you wrote all that and used the the words " poking fun ".

I hope he is doing well, as I'm sure everyone else does.

A few things with the limited details we've gotten: Trying to load, Lake, 15 & 16 year old "when the gun fired".

The story they reported just sounds all Darwin.

Number 1 rule of Spearfishing: Never, ever, point a speargun (loaded or unloaded) at, or in the general direction of another person. It appears there was likely a violation of rule number 1 in this case. Let's hope and pray this young man makes a complete recovery. Given the nature of the injury, he is very lucky to be alive.

in new york you can not buy a speargun if you are under aged the number one rule is to never load speargun on dry land number 2 rule is when loading a gun never load the gun pointed at someone and the main question you should ask is what were these kids doing with a speargun where were they and where did they get it

This was in MIA. And besides, any cuban with a mask and snorkel will give their kids a speargun to see what they do with it. Usually its undersized fish and bait, but occasionally its themselves...

For the people that are crying saying this is not cool to joke or laugh at people doing stupid thinks or getting hurt. Then it must be safe to say these people have NEVER watched a homemade youtube video, watched americas funniest home videos or any one of those thousands of other shows that show people doing stupid things.

I am not a Cuban so I can objectively say that your statement is probably not based in fact. I dive with friends of Cuban heritage and they are incredible divers as well as very safety conscious.

Tosh would LOVE this. Hope everything works out for the boy. Kids do dumb stuff. Growing up I had knife and gun accidents a few times, once an old Bronco even rolled over on me and tried to take me out. A home-made zipline tried to ensure that I'd never be able to reproduce once too. The old man was certainly looking out for me or I wouldn't be here. Fortunately no one was seriously injured in any of my mishaps. And it wasn't due to brains...

More info here: http://newsfeedresearcher.com/data/articles_m25_2/spear-lopez-doctors.html

I originally assumed that a pneumatic gun was involved, but it may have been a band gun with an improperly latched shaft. Drop in the wishbone and away the shaft goes. Loading a gun on land and someone standing in front of it breaks a whole bunch of speargun handling rules, the victim was lucky the spear passed through his brain just missing the critical sub-structures or he would have been killed. Long term there may still be some consequences, let us hope he has a complete recovery. Everyone should learn from this near tragedy or it will be repeated, spearguns are deadly weapons, not toys. Where was the adult supervision?

I wouldn't say "kids these days" If you are saying that you must have: 1. had a very sheltered life or 2. forgot what its like to live for the moment. This was an unfortunate accident but I think we can all say we've cheated death a few times as kids. I know I have. I miss those days....

Momma always said : If your gonna be stupid...you better be tough !!

I bet they don't try that again !!! Speedy recovery :toast:
