CA has been rainy and cold with big swell, so to satisfy my need for the ocean I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium with my girlfriend. They have a pelagic tank that has hammerheads, 300 lbs+ tuna, dorado, pelagic rays, bonito and best of all the only great white ever kept in captivity. Pretty rad place to spend a rainy afternoon.

Her she is again. She's about 4-5 feet long.

The aquarium's attendance has risen over 40% since she arrived.

I had seen tuna before, but not 300 pounders.

The rest of the tanks were put together well too.

It' been a long time since I've been there. It's pretty cool that they have pelagics like tunas and GWS of that size. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the photos. That is an incredible place, and my wife and I have been often when we have gone to Carmel for our anniversary. We have never seen the GWS, so maybe its time to go back there next month.

I'd really like to see the GWS, but that's the only place I want to see one.

Same here unless I am in the inside of a sharkcage.

Who care about the GWS! There are 300 BFT in there!

I was there during the summer and stood in front of that Blue Water tank for about 45 minutes just mesmerized by the size and power of the Tuna. The whole time my son Nate (in my avatar) was screaming because he was hungry. But, a man has to maintain his Priorities! ;)

Couldn't agree more. Those bad boys are crazy. Just looking at how wide they are makes me wonder about shooting one...

That juvenile GWS is still alive? That's amazing. Kudos to the aquarium's marine biologists and staff.
BTW, those are awesome pics. What kind of camera were you using? All of my jellyfish pics at that aquarium were bright blurs.

I hope that all our wondering will materialize into cold spring steel penetrating through 2 ft of muscle, and fresh sashimi for dinner :D Good luck.

I use a Canon 10D. All of those pics were taken with a Canon 16-35mm f2.8L lens. I'm a photojournalism student at Brooks Institute of Photography, so I take quite a few pictures when I go on trips!

Dan, Do you know many people from the Brooks Institute? I have a sister that is getting her masters from there.

I know quite a few studernts there, but most of them are from teh Ventura campus which is where the visualjournalism students and the film students are. There are four campuses in Santa Barbara (half hour away) where the masters programs are. What's her name?

Those are awesome pics...Might be worth it for me to take Monterey to check out the aquarium - and of course, to spearfish :]

My trigger finger starts twitching when I look into the "tuna tank". I haven't been there since they've had the white, I'll be bummed if I miss seeing her.
