My wife and I saw the Oliver Stone film "Savages" today, with John Travolta, Benicio del Toro, and Salma Hayek.

I don't think it will win any academy awards, but most of it was shot in Laguna Beach and Dana Point, and it had some spectacular footage. There were scenes on Main Beach, houses on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, that gazebo overlooking Dana Point Harbor with views of the harbor down below, down in the harbor itself, etc. You might enjoy seeing the local spots in a big screen film.

It had a lot of sex and violence too if you like that sort of thing.

It's accurate as to some of the residents who reside in the area.

The prequel novel, "The Kings of Cool", takes place in Laguna too -

Don Winslow, novelist/screenwriter, used to live in the condos on the corner of Del Avion and Golden Lantern -

Saw them filming it last year. With the amount of money put into advertising it, it better be good!

That reminds me of a line from the film when the drug lord Elena (Salma Hayek) asks Ophelia, the babe from Laguna, when she started using drugs. She replies that she was in eighth grade. Elena asks what her parents thought about that, and she replies that they really didn't care.

Obviously that isn't true of all Laguna parents, but my son and his wife thought it was true of enough of them so that they moved out of Laguna to the Sacramento area. They didn't think Laguna was a good place to raise their kids.

Wait, they actually moved FROM Laguna to Sacramento because they thought it was a better place to raise kids? There are some nice parts of Sacramento but the entire Central Valley is meth heaven. It's no sanctuary from reality.

I'm sure that there is no place where drugs are not readily available, but they live out in Loomis and it sure has a different feel from Laguna. People seem so much more laid back and unpretentious, and money doesn't seem to matter quite so much. And of course horse property is everywhere, so my wife loves it. If they had an ocean, I think we would probably move up there.

I'm probably doing a poor job of explaining my son's decision, but it wasn't just about drugs. Money was so important, and many parents would turn their homes over to their kids for parties with no adults present.

Good. We didn't think it was great, but it had its moments.
