John:
Do you know of a dive operation that visits Grey's Reef? I would like to dive it to see what the fish huggers are so worked up about. I've got a boat booked out of Wilmington, NC for the weekend of Feb 6, we're just waiting for the seas to calm down.

Island dive center runs charters to grays reef. Judy wright runs it. She is the one that was supposed to represent sport divers at the grays reef meetings but instead pushed to have spearfishing banned there.
DO NOT USE ISLAND DIVE CENTER They are Anti-Spearfishing!

The only one I know of is Island Dive Center of of St Simons Island. It looks like there site is down www.islanddivecenter.com I have been out with them in the past but probably won't again. Do a forum search.
If you can find a private charter or someone who has a boat and share expenses that would be the way to go.

Rob I did read your report on the Alliance Board Forum so I was aware of island dive center. But John.....if you're asking about conditions on the reef and you're not going on island dive center's boat.....do I have to beg for an invite?

There are several alternatives to Island Dive Center. Georgia Offshore in Richmond Hill Ga. runs to Grays as well as TLC Charters. They don't run much in the winter but will probably be up for a trip if you are interested. I organize trips on several boats running out of Savannah, but Grays is too far to run for us. Personally I was not very impressed with Grays Reef because it is only a small example of the diving opportunities along the Georgia/ SC coast. Two weeks ago we dove some fantastic ledges in 70', 15 miles out of Wassaw Sound(30lb grouper, 26 pound grouper, 14lb hogfish). Water temps run in the low 60's with variable vis. Our temps now are in the low 50's.(Isotherm!).
As far as Cobia, Georgia has a closed season from Nov. 30 to March 16. They start to show up around April or May.
Georgia Offshore- (912) 756-5260
TLC Charters- (912) 270-4854
These charters have a minimum of 6 divers at around $100 per person
My name is Gene Miles. We dive year round whenever the weather will let us go. My adress is genemiles@earthlink.net. Phone# (912) 656-8494
I'll be glad to get you on a boat here if you are a spear-fisher. We usually split fuel.
We pissed off a few reef watchers this past summer because of our horrible hobby, so we usually only market to other shooters. Don't get me wrong! I only shoot what I need for supper & enjoy watching wildlife as much as the reef watchers. This summer we photo'd a Whale Shark, Right Whales, Spotted dolphins, Jewfish, Angelfish, etc., etc. But who can resist a big fat, juicy piece of grouper or cobia on the grill?

Thanks Gene! I have a small group of spearfishermen I've cultivated since moving to Greenville, SC. They are always interested in getting into the water and stalking some fish. The grouper I made for dinner last night was taken from North Carolina waters, and tastes every bit as good as Florida grouper. I will call you in the near future to set something up, i am in the process of moving my dive shop this week, so it will take a couple of weeks before I can get out.

Hey Charlestondiver, those are some nice looking hogs, dont see hogs that size like that in the keys like Im use to seeing. Enless your going REAL deep, how deep did you and your fellow spearo shoot them at? I just moved here so I dont know much about the local migration of species up here. Does anyone go for pelagics in SC, I know its a long ride out the the gulf steam?
