It was in today's paper, but still no name. It was near Kaupo which is a town outside Hana in Waiu Bay. It is a really remote location. It definitely sounds like SWB, but then that can't be confirmed until more info comes out. I will type the article out here:

A free diver drowned while fishing witha companion Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

The man's name was not released Monday, pending notification of his family, but acting Batallion chief Mike Cummings said the victim was witha group that ahd been camping and fishing at Waiu Bay in the general vicinity of Kaupo store. The victim was 38.

An emergency call came in about 2:10pm, but because the cell phone connection from the remote area was not very clear, the Air One helicopter was dispatched to amke a search for the diver's party.

Rescue company 10 from Kahului also was dispatched. Air one landed at 2:42pm and found some friends attempting CPR.

Engine Company 13 from Kula also arrived, but the man could not be revived.

Cummings said the man's friend observed him in trouble and sinking and brought him to shore.

Sounds like another victim to SWB. May he rest in peace :( .

Sure sounds like SWB, especially since his partner found him sinking. I spent a weekend camped at Waiu (it's private land), and being on the backside, it tends to take a hard hit from the wind. I can see how it would be really hard to keep track of your partner in that kind of wind chop.

What a bummer.

Sorry for the ignorance, but what is SWB and how can it be avoided?

Shallow Water Blackout. If you do a search for it on this forum, it has been discussed at length. Here is a couple of threads.
