Hey guys,
Will be down in Wstprt this weekend.
Was planing on getting in the water- any of you guys seen any fish?
Usualy a nice run up the Wsprt river- though the water seems too cold.
The buzzards tower still says 37. Thats about as cold as up in Rockport.

reactions?

Dive deeper water, find cod, avoid hypothermia.

Dive shallow, find nothing, avoid hypothermia.

This time of year in Rockport, you can find cod as shallow as 5ft. Just not very many of them.

All right here is the scoop on Wstprt. I was down and spoke to the most reliable source I know- my mechanic.

He said - when the Herring run the Bass are back in gthe river and when the Dandylions pop up the RI Togg are back......

Sounds a bit like the farmers almenac but sh*t I buy it. And the guy is in the water killing fish at every opp there is.

Cod in Rockport?

I have been diving all winter- ain't seen so much as a star fish.
Granted on the weekends the vis has been as good as a few inches.

Last Monday I went diving under the Padanaram bridge in Dartmouth. Visibility was terible...no fish. Found a fishing pole and a pair of crusty sunglasses.

I went fishing off teh jetty at the end of the canal, on the freak chance a cod might come in close...no luck.

I'm hoping to go to Cape Anne and meet Chauugie for cod next week. He says it may be slim pickins.

Long week and allot of beer and red wine on Friday night AND an 8:30AM flood tide in Westport. But I made it in.

Still no fish.

Pea soup fog and dead calm- would have been picture perfect.

Viz- 10-15.

Anybody else have any luck?

Hey CT--

It's getting close-- but I don't think we're there yet. NOAA has Newport at 48.7 degrees this evening (4/28/05). At that temp last Nov. (around the 10th), the fish had pretty much gone. I heard some schoolies are in the (Narragansett) Bay-- several places along Newport, and coming up the Narrow River as well; the bait fish are showing up in a lot places. I'm thinking 4 or 5 days with water temps at 50+ degrees, and the real fish will be back in good numbers. Keep us posted, and I'll do the same. I may try to get out next Friday (May 6th), depending on the weather and slack tide time. I'll probably do the rocky island between the coves at Ft. Wetherill. I'll let you know if the Togs are back or any juvenile stripers worthy of mention (28"+). I'll be using scuba and diving down to depths of 45 feet or so. I'll also let you know at what depths I see anything worthy of mentioning.

Cheers!

Still coming up empty.
The twisted thing is that there seem to be Bugs making there way up to Rockport. Still Short but at least there Bugs. This lends its self to water warming up as its the food they are after. But why there are still no Tog ? AND my yard is full of Dandy Lions......

Till Next weekends report.

the water in newport is crap right now. it has been fairly rough for the past several days from the beaches around castle hill past the npt. bridge. no vis, no fish, no fun

Thanks CT and Rob. I notice the dandelions popped up in my RI front yard on Friday (4/29). NOAA has the water temp. in Newport at 47.3-- getting very close to that magical number, 50 degrees (though I really don't like getting in the water much until 55+). Let us know when anyone sees/spears some serious fish...

Saw a few winter flounder and got 8 nice bugs on Saturday. One went over 4 pounds, not bad for the "early" early season. Hunted the mouth of the herring run of Chatham, no bass, just seals. shot a couple of fat herring nice females full of roe. fried up nice !!! wanted to check some inshore cod numbers but the weather was crappy. My journal says we shot bluefish on the 18th of May last year.. so hopefully things will be in full swing in a week or so .

I hit Jamestown (Ft. Wetherill) on Sunday. Even though I did slack tide, there was a good sized surge, lots of foam on the current lines. When the current started moving it, it really went strongly. The visibility was terrible. The water temp was 44 degrees. Had my gun locked and loaded: but did not see a single fish! Still too cold for the lower bay.

I'll keep your posted.

My son and I will be staying in Somerset, Thursday thru Sunday. Plan on spearfishing in Little Compton. Went there last weekend. Water looked like pea soup. Bought a surf board this year to use on days like that. The waves were great for surfing but I was never able to get up and surf the waves. Surfing is hard but at least I had fun trying. If you want to get together, drop me a line. Checked the surfing report and it say it's suppose to be flat, which should be great for spearfishing!

UPDATE: I did a repeat of the the dive below on May 5th ... In 4 days, a lot happened: the water temp. rose to 46, and the Tautog have come back (in good numbers!).

Went south to visit family and fish Saturday and Sunday. My son and I got our Tog limit each day. Blew an opportunity on a nice bass. Tried a long shot on a big scup to test the limits on the Yokooji gun. Spear went staight ran out of shoot line. We had a blast and ate grilled and fried Tog with family and friends. That's what it's all about.

Vin-- great picture. I've been Tautog hunting in Jamestown (both Ft. Wetherill, plus Beavertail parking lot #2) ... they were around in good numbers the first 3 weeks of May, but the last week all but a few smaller ones seem to have either been fished out or migrated elsewhere. They say the bass are around, but I haven't seen any.

There are bass around. I dove this morning *somewhere in newport* and took a 30lb fish. I got a good look at a 40+ while reloading. it always happens that way. also ran into a nice 8lb tog. vis was excelent, 20' vertical.

thank you CL. I noticed a few tog with some patchy white spots, looked kind of like mold you would get on old bread. I had a fish get it in my aquarium once, I think it was called "ick" or something like that. Did you notice any fish where you were with this?

FDN,
For each of the last several years, I've seen some pretty mangey looking tautog early in the season, with white patches, deteriorating fins and some even seem to have chunks missing from their sides. I suspect they get the disease where ever they winter over. By July they'll be all gone (dead I suspect).

My son got a nice large fluke. We ended up throwing it away be it was diseased. It had lots of red dots on the top where there were no scales and the shin was translucent. Had a couple on the bottom side too. Looked gross. Got a small striper on Sunday. 32"

I recall seeing "mutant" togs throughout the season. The dorsal fin on many deformed in the same way. I used to think it was from poor spear shots that healed, but I've seen too many to think that spear wounds are the cause. No noticable problems with the flesh though. Maybe we should start keeping track of these observations to make sure they are not somehow connected similar to or related to lobster shell disease???

Finally got in the water this week. Lots of togs and schoolies - some bigger bass also. Shot a 20lb'er Friday. Vis got poor over the weekend.

Nice Joe! I like your avatar. I did so much diving in the past week I am still rolling like the waves...how long is that supposed to last !!! ha ha I got one bass and two tog. Saw lots of schoolies, and swam with a sand shark for about three minutes. (was going to shoot it, but decided not to because I wouldn't be able to convince my wife to cook it.) All decent sized. Had alot of fun.

I heard that these sharks taste like urine. I shot one last summer, and every line fisherman on shore told me they pee through their skin, and that's why they taste bad. Is it true? I don't know, but if they taste good, tell me, because I know a very good spot for them. I can tell you that they are hard to kill, and they try to poke you with their "dorsal dart".
