I had this Friday off, the forecast was for flat seas, and I had promised the kids that I would take them whale watching.... so, a holoholo trip was on. It was the first time that I had my daughter and son out on the boat. I've been hesistant to take them, since Hawaii waters can be so rough and they're still spazzes (6 and 8 years old). Right out of the Kihei boat ramp, we spotted a pod of humpbacks. I killed the engine, and as we drifted, they slowly cruised by. The kids got a kick out of listening to them breathe; the sound really impresses on you what large animals they are.
We tied up at Molokini crater and swam around. I was dismayed at how little fish were around. I pulled down the mooring line to 80 feet, no problem, so I felt good about that. We stopped at the Saint Anthony wreck on the way back. They each got to see a "sunken ship" and wondered about the "treasure." :-) We also had a large turtle, maybe 350 to 400#, hang out with us. He literally wanted to float next to me, close enough to touch. He'd come up right next to me and just sit there, inches away. The kids thought that was cool. Of course we didn't touch him since that would be a federal offense.... :D
The weather went to hell the next day and has been that way since. Bummer. Oh yeah, a friend was out on Friday, same side of the island, and saw 4 tigers, the largest of which was 15 feet long. Watch your back!
