I've been diving for 3 years, basically diving for lobster. I usually dive Plymouth, MA or the Rockport area.

I'd like to branch out into spearfishing but don't know a thing about it.

Do I buy a pole spear to start or a speargun?

What's the best way to learn the sport besides OJT?

Thanks for any help.

definatly go with a spear gun. pole spears are good for , lets see, starfish...thats about it. go with a euro style gun. 75 or 90 cm. single 18mm band with a hawian shaft. got all that?? its the best you can do for all around hunting, and ease of operation. as far as manufacturors, OMER, Picasso, Beauchat, Rabitech they are all good. However check out InApnea.com if you want something a little different. Juan's Euro-Sniper gun is nice. The best way to learn about spearfishing is to find someone to teach ya. Have you ever been to Newport?

Johlar,

A pole spear or a speargun will work, but I have yet to see anyone up here use a polespear. I have both, but I usually opt for my RA 80. The best way to learn the sport is to OJT with someone who knows what they are doing, and has the patience to actually stick around and watch you. My recommendation is to go to some local tournaments, join a local club, and attend any sort of a club social. After other spearfishermen get to know you, they may be more inclined to help you out. Once you are networked with local divers, your technique, knowledge, and fun factor will increase. Boresight your eyeball to your gun with an underwater target before going hunting. Depending on your comfort level and time dedicated, you should be halfway proficient after a season. Once you get good, don't forget to mentor some other newbies.

Good luck in Rockport, definitely dive Old Garden and Folly's Cove

Calvin, wondering where do you go in Westport? Grew up in Fall River and try to visit and fish as often as I can. Most often I dive at Sakonet point or just west of South Shore in Little Compton, if visibility permits.

Grew up in Fall River.

Now I'm getting scared! I didn't think I'd ever run into another Fall River native on the net.

A spearfisher no less!

Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water.
