ANYONE TRIED STRIPPED BASS SPEARING?
I got an email saying that this weekend's tournament in Lake Powell is cancelled due to discrepancies on $$ for permits, but there's some contact info in here for anyone looking to give this lake a try!
Lake Powell Spearfishing Update
May 7, 2005
We apologize for the confusion concerning this meet. This is the first time anything like this has taken place at Lake Powell, so we are still trying to get the bugs worked out.
So far this is what we know:
The permits required by the National Park Service for an "Official Tournament" are in excess of what we would normally get from entry fee's. So we are NOT going to have a Tournament. We are going to have a Seminar followed by a day of fun diving.
Friday night May 6, 2005 at 6:30pm we will meet at Twin Finn located at 811 Vista Ave. Wayne Gustaveson with the Utah Game and Fish, Rick Langley and/or Jes with the Arizona Game and Fish will be there to talk to us about the rules and regulations concerning Spear fishing, followed by an informative Spearfishing discussion from Mike McGuire who was on last years USA Spearfishing team, about Apnea diving (free diving), types of Spearfishing equipment, and techniques for hunting, along with the importance of Spearfishing to our Eco-System. This is going to be a very informative seminar for both Novices who know "nothing" about spearfishing to the more advanced who would like to offer advice/suggestions or maybe pickup a few pointers.
Saturday morning May 7, 2005 we will check in at Twin Finn at 8:00am to do a head count, tell people the different access points. Then everyone is on their own. At 2:30 we will meet back in town at Gollard Park by the airport, weight the fish and give locations they were taken, for Game and Fish record keeping, tell our best Spearfishing story of the day, and we will end the day with a barbeque for a donation of $10.00 to help offset the cost of the Barbeque.
The Days Inn at Lake Powell has offered to give us great prices for rooms in the city of Page, their number is 928.645.2800 and mention you are here for "Twin Finn's Spearfishing Seminar."
There are many places to rent boats in Page, One thing to keep in mind is that you will probably get better rates renting out of the NPS recreation area, but you will have to transport the boats and launch them yourselves. Wahweap Marina 928.645.1111 & Antelope Recreation 928.645.5900 have boats already in the water. Twin Finn rents Dive Kayaks and will give a special rate of $20.00 for single person kayaks for a 24hr rental. But, first come-first serve on availability.
We will be keeping a separate record at Twin Finn for Men's/Women's, Apnea/Scuba, biggest fish taken at Lake Powell. So check in often for current records!
Please RSVP if you are coming so we know how much barbeque to get ready and let us know if you would be available to help flip burgers or any other help would be appreciated. Page Arizona is a close knit, small community with a warm atmosphere that offers: Raft trips down the Colorado River, Slot Canyons, Boat Tours, Golfing, Hiking, and a Recreation Area with more shore line than the Western Coast of the United States. To find out more about the different activities contact the Chamber of Commerce at 888.261.PAGE. The divers in our community are an extension of our own families and it should be a great time.
***Dad's and Children stay an extra day an make it special for "Mothers Day" on May 8!
