A Boca Raton woman beat 239 anglers -- 224 of whom were men -- in the Spearboard Open at New Port Richey and might be the first spearfish-tournament winner in Florida.

A Boca Raton engineer might be the first woman to win a major spearfishing tournament in Florida. Sheri Daye, 48, won top honors in last month's third annual Spearboard Open at New Port Richey in a field of 240 -- all but 16 of them men.

Using both scuba gear and freediving, Daye speared two Cubera snapper weighing 19.6 and 13.5 pounds; two black grouper (23.2 and 19.7); two hogfish (5.0 and 4.7); two triggerfish (5.3 and 5.4) and one amberjack (26.8) for a total gutted weight of 123.2 pounds worth 113.2 points. Points are capped at 20 per fish and there are limits on the number of fish taken per species.

''I loved it,'' said tournament organizer Scott McPherson, who founded the Spearboard.com website in 2002. ``I was thrilled for Sheri. I thought it was really cool. She beat some of the best shooters in the country.''

Under the rules, competitors had one day to spearfish anywhere they liked as long as they made it to the weigh-in in New Port Richey on time on May 22.

Spearfishers went hunting along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Jacksonville to New Orleans.

Daye and teammates Tim Milner and Jimmy Reitz opted for the Gulf waters off Key West. They located wrecks and reefs on their own, plus they got a tip on a wreck location where Daye got her amberjack from captain Bob DeMauro, who runs spearfishing charters to the Dry Tortugas.

While size mattered, so did diversity of species.

USING HER BRAIN

''I won this partly because I used my brain as well,'' Daye said. ``Guys want to go for the real big fish. Guys on my boat wanted to keep going for grouper, and I started going midwater to get triggerfish. I really didn't think it would be enough to win the tournament.''

For her top prize, Daye chose a custom-made buoyancy-compensation vest.

The Honduran-born Daye moved to South Florida at age 8 and didn't learn to swim until she was 10. She earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida and an MBA from the University of Miami and now works full-time for IBM in Boca Raton. Divorced with no children, she took up scuba diving and, later, freediving.

''I went with a couple of guys, and they wouldn't give me a turn on their spearguns. So I went out and bought one,'' she said.

She went spearfishing on weekends and days off, joined the Longfins (a freediving club) and got help from two friends. In spearfishing tournaments, she usually won the women's division.

''Dave Earp and Chad Palan -- those two guys are my mentors,'' she said.

Daye got so good at spearfishing while holding her breath that she holds six International Underwater Spearfishing Association world records: a 33-pound dolphin, 18.6-pound mutton snapper, 22.8-pound yellow jack, 46-pound Pacific Cubera snapper and a 157-pound yellowfin tuna -- all women's marks-- plus a 40.8-pound permit that is an overall world record. The permit was speared off Mexico.

MALE DETRACTORS

Daye says many spearfishers in the male-dominated sport wish her well, but there are some detractors.

''I do get some resentment,'' she said. ``There are a few, I know they can't stand it. I've had some imply I was cheating when I wasn't. When you're in the public eye, there are some people happy for your success and some people who put you down.''

Daye said she may take up underwater photography if she gets bored with spearfishing, but for now the athletic pastime suits her.

''To be in the water and the beauty you see, the wonder of nature -- that's amazing,'' she said. ``Some [moments] are terrorizing, like a big shark. But you come away with a feeling you don't get anywhere else. I'm goal-oriented and I like eating fresh fish. You bond with your friends out there. ``When you put that whole package together, the real world is completely out of your mind.''

Awesome.

What is the deal with having to sign up to see that link though??

I just signed up on herald.com so I could see the link. Be careful though, you will be signed up for a bunch of spam if you don't select "No, thanks" on a couple pages.

Thanks for your support guys. You don't know how much it means to me.

Sue is a great writer, well-respected and for good reasons. It was an honor to be interviewed by a newspaper, but from previous experience, I was cringing a little before it came out. You never know what they are going to say, but my Mom loved it, so I'm happy.

Anyway, just a couple things I'd like to clarify....not her fault, but mine in the way I communicated it.

1. Detractors are such a minority, barely worth mentioning....just two guys that I know of. If I took the time to thank every man that helped me, I'd sound like I thought I was accepting an academy award or something, so I'll simply say, "thanks" to my spearfishing brothers. You know who you are, and I adore you.
2. Tim and Jimmy are very smart, talented, and understated guys. I'm afraid I made them sound like dummies, but it's quite the contrary. It was their strategizing and talent at finding spots that put us on fish. It was their generosity of giving me a wreck all to myself that enabled me to get my cuberas, and it was their encouragement to make one more drop that enabled me to fill the last of my categories. A big reason I keep doing these tournaments is because of them. They are the type that quietly go about their business, spearing 60 pound blacks and 75 pound cobias that we never hear about.
3. I was born in Nebraska.

Yeah, Scott, and I won't even go into the part about being part Chinese and speaking Spanish, or I'll really confuse you.

Sheri: When I saw the "Honduran-born", I knew that you hadn't been given the opportunity to proof it before it went out. They also spelled your name "Shari" under the tuna pic, and you beat 240 "anglers" not 239. I'm not sure how many were men. :D

What kind of assholes were they? Didn't even let you try?

Congrats on the win :D

Glad to see such an accomplished, world class shooter get such positive recognition in front of the general public.
I am not surprised that Sheri won. Way to go, killer.

A UF mechanical engineer? Can't get any better than that. I know a few of those ;)

SHE's 48 yrs old?!!!! No way, that's crazy. The fountain of youth Ponce de Leon sought after must be Sheri's kitchen sink faucet. You ought to sell bottles of your tap water over ebay and say it's your secret fountain of youth. You'll be a millionaire in 3 days. :D

Seriously, I wouldn't have put her past mid-30's, or even that. Ladies 30 yrs old in my town can't even hold a candle to her.

Enough of the compliments...Congrats on the win, Sheri! Well deserved!

Yeah, Scott, and I won't even go into the part about being part Chinese and speaking Spanish, or I'll really confuse you.

Let me introduce you to Hector Fernandez. He's Chinese/Spanish and he speaks German!

Figure that one out!!:D

Well, Rich, I actually knew that about Hector. He once made a comment about how ridiculous it was to have so many divisions/categories for trophies. He thought it was so ridiculous that he was going to create a category for half-Chinese Spanish speaking contestants so he could win it. I'm sure he thought he had it in the bag, but I was going to tell him that he'd have to fight me for that one...:D The thread disappeared for some reason. I have to get one of my teeth crowned soon. I have many things in common with Hector which is downright scary.

Hector, if you read this, congratulations on your baby. It's great to see you so happy.

Inlet, my maiden name was Leon. Maybe I'm related to Ponce.

Sheri… I’d like to publicly congratulate you on your finish in the SBO. It was a longtime goal, almost a dream, to win a men’s tournament. Your performance was no accident and few people know all of the hard work and effort you’ve put in to perfecting your spearfishing skills… you earned all of your success!

It is kind of funny looking back 9 years ago… this good looking lady that was asking all of these questions about spearfishing and wanted me to take her out diving. I figured I’d take you out once and that would be it (and no more questions). :D

I don’t really like diving with others; in fact I’ve only actually been in the water with 6 people over the last 10 years. You know me, it’s all about speed and production, I’ve got to pay the light bill, and I don’t want anyone to slow me down.

But you were different. I immediately realized you were an extremely talented diver. You’re in-water skills far out surpassed mine and once you learned to shoot, be observant, and “read” the reef (all of which take years/practice/work to prefect), you would be an outstanding spearfisherman.

I don’t know what your next goal in spearfishing will be… but I do know, whatever it is, you will succeed. You always strive to be the best you can be! Congratulations! :)

Dave

Hey Sheri, it's good to hear about brains over brawn winning out - however infrequently. Congrats! So, do you think you'll be trying for a monster warsaw in the future?
BTW, how did you fish off Key West and get to weigh-in in NPR in time - did you invent a transporter over there at IBM?
