Played hooky for the start of snapper season.

Seas: 1-2 ft
Weather: Clear skies; Upper 70s
Water Temp: 66
Viz: 15-20 on the bottom

Dive 1: Natural limestone reef (83ft) - a few snappers and a slipper

Dive 2: Wreck (78ft) - a few more snappers and a grouper

My wife had the catch of the day. She sacrificed her second dive to look for a "Neverlost" unit that fell off a diver's wrist when he entered the water. We dropped a weighted line off the stern and Candy did a circular search. She found the unit in about 15 minutes.

Cool. Good report.

Stone, who do you recommend up there for a hard core snapper trip? I'm not talking about a head boat, but a for-hire guy with real numbers, including some good Grouper spots once I limit on Snapper. I'd use Jim Zurbrick and the JR2, but he is booked most weekends. I don't mind traveling to Destin. I would like to shoot some Reds this season, and soon. Thanks.

Contact Jason Mical, captain of the Backlash - 850-837-6800. I used to shoot fish with him in the winter years ago, he is one of the good guys.

If not him, Kelly Windes of Sunrise - 850-837-2320. Sunrise typically owns the red snapper division of the Destin Fishing Rodeo in October. I think Jason started out as a mate on Sunrise before he got his own boat.

Thanks for that info. I'll be giving him a call.
