I want to get a tank filled with 100 % o2. (I am nitrox cert.)

For emerency's on board and hangover's on board !!!

I need to buy a reg. for 100 % o2 - got any ideas ?

You might want to move this post to one of the bubble blower sections if you want more opinions.

We use an AL80 filled with 75-80% because at this mix you get a full 3200 psi. If you want 100% O2 you will probably only be able to put about 2500psi in the tank. As far as regs go, I am using an old US Diver that was specifically O2 cleaned for mixes above 40%.

I use an OMS reg made for 02 they are pretty cheap and come ready to go.
I have atleast 60/70 dives on one of them and the only thing I use it for is 100% 02 and I have had no problems.

An old steel 71.2 cu ft tank makes a great O2 bottle because of the lower pressure, 2475 psi.

More volume than an 80 alum. has at that pressure, and you'll have less corrosion problems around the neck than with an aluminum tank.

Zeagle has the parts available to convert our 1st stage regulators from 40% to 100% O2 use.

BTW, advanced nitrox certification is the proper level to have to allow filling scuba bottles above 40%.

Stinkey Fish:

If you are just keeping a bottle around for emergency first aid or just an uplift, may I suggest you pick up a 30 cu. ft. (Al) Pony Bottle. If you still need a bottle for decompression, seems like steel seems to work best for me.

I used to have one of the original style steel 72's where the fill pressure was 2250 p.s.i. or so. Over time the bottle developed a small leak around the valve somewhere and eventually failed visual inspection. It served it's purpose for many years. Since then I have not had any decompression needs beyond what my 30 ft. Aluminum Pony bottle has to offer. Eventually, I may need to get a larger NOx bottle. But pure oxygen is best for first aid.

The Aluminum 30 is a great bottle to have around. I can bring it along in a bag, even for a fishing trip: regulator and a short pressure gauge bungied together. If need be, it can be used for some general needs around the hull of the boat. But if you suspect you may possibly use it deeper than 20 FSW, for whatever reason then you should probably do an 80% mix or the magic number that a air top off will do for you. (Remember - you should not really be breathing oxygen content gas above a PO2 above 1.6 ATM without exceptional situations or above water, for therapy. For pure O2 that equates to 1 + 2/3 atmospheres, 1.00 + .66 or PO2 = 1.66 ATM at 20 FSW. Any deeper, and 100% oxygen will have a greater "partial" pressure which may have life threatening consequences according to the CONVENTD acronym.

Recently, I have had no problems getting 100% O2 fills to 3000 psi. Perhaps special equipment is available to boost the pressure beyond what the bulk delivery bottles have to offer. Hopefully I am allowed to say this. And it may depend on where you go for fills.

It's a gas !

Just for giggles - try blowing out a candle after breathing pure O2 for a minute or so. Don't worry, you will not blow up.

P.S. - There are a few regulators that are better candidates for O2 use, and they will need to be prepped for O2 (> 40%) use, which costs a few $extra. I have a Sherwood BRUT which is cheap enough for basic deco. use.

SF,

Just stumbled on this thread; missed it first time. I get 3000psi O2 fills at a tech shop near me in Miami. They have a Haskell pump to boost the pressure over the 2250 you get from the gas company. If you look around for a tech shop, you shoudn't have any problem getting the fill or the O2 clean on your reg.

Take care,
Steve
