I make my own that are .44 mag and cost under $10. I slip one into each wetsuit sleeve or diveskin. No pin to pull, they don't fall off the end of your spear and are re-loadable. I'm in the spearboard open and will bring one to the weigh in. Any body want to check it out and write down a few notes is welcome. see ya!!!

How reliable firing are they?

Hey Sharpshooter,
Got your registration form today. You'll have to show me that homemade PH. That must stop a shark in his tracks. What does it do to amberjacks?

The shaft tip hits the primer causing the round to go off. No problems so far in about 15 years. Once, you see this PH and its construction you'll understand. It's one of those seeing it and handling it, is easier than explaning it. Scott: It gets the job done on sharks and AJ's. The aj's just go into instant shock/death and start sinking. I'm thinking of making a 30-06 PH with a 220 grain bullet. I think the spec's on that baby is rated to kill anything up to and including moose. I have a 30-06 that i hunt with. Let ya know later at the Open. See ya!!

I know what you mean bud,
I hate those underwater moose. They always seem to find a way of sneaking up on you from behind.

They call them "white pointers" in australia and here we call them "great whites". I read a post about 2 great whites caught or found in this local area I hunt in. Figure I take a .44 mag in one sleeve and a 30-06 PH in the other sleeve in case a "underwater moose" shows up looking at me to be the main dinner course.

The idea of an AJ going tits-up right away is appealing. I'd like to see that! :D

I have a distinct feeling that a common shaft in a large great white's mouth would not make a significant contribution to saving your ass. I would have to concede that a ph would definitely be in order. Now that I think of it, I am beginning to reconsider my stance on PH's for use against sharks.

Any pictures of this available?
I hate sharks & I love making stuff myself. Seems like a match made in heaven.

Sharp, yours sounds similar to the one that Ray Odor makes and sells. Is it?

I don't know what his looks like. I saw a post of a pvc ph that was 45 cal.. I did make one that was kind of like his in a 45 cal. But, my 44 mag is different. I don't have a digital camera, so, you got to wait. You have to decide for yourself what kind of PH you want and the safety features. Mine may be better for divers that have had a few "gray suit" encounters. Most PH's have a safety pin that takes an extra second for the PH to be armed. I like one that doesn't and just slips on the end of the shaft. You got to have that shaft tip hit the primer for it to go off. It doesn't have a firing pin that if you have the safety pin out and the PH was to hit the deck could cause it to go off. Many years ago, somebody dropped a PH on the deck of the Groundskeeper. I'll look for the patched hole when Capt. Bob & Chris take me to the grounds next month. Wonder if it's so glassed over, I won't find it? Nope, it wasn't me that dropped it, i wasn't even on the boat. Stay wet!!!

Here's Ray Odors PH:

I'd be all over the slip-on PH over the screw-on except for the firing issue. I want something to go off every time. If your version is reliable, I'd be interested in one for myself.

Will Ray Odors slip on PH work on line shafts that have the dual barb and the gradually tapered tip. Has anybody tried this?
It looks like they're more designed for the free shaft type tip that's in the picture above.

Ray's works 99 percent of the time once you get use to it..

I have a question. Every slip on PH uses the spear tip as the firing pin. Why? Is it not feasible to take the existing PH design and, instead of a threaded end, have a sleeve, lined with rubber or whatever so it stays on? I would think if you still got the spear tip all the way into the PH so there was no give when fired, it would work just as well as a threaded end.
Or couldn't you find a way to make up a sleeve to work with a regular PH? Either way, you have a PH with its own firing pin that also is very quick to put on. Comments?

Guess, I'm just tired, but, why do you need a firing pin in a PH, if the spear tip hits the primer? Most screw on Ph have a spring with a firing pin and safety pin. While, i'm thinking about it. How many divers shoot 2 bands with a Ph instead of one band? If you have a Ph try one band sometime so you know ahead of time if it works. You may not have time to load two bands on an agressive shark. My worst case: I bayoneted the shark. I had just strung up a fish and put the shaft in the gun when a bull zoomed straight in from nowhere.. I yanked my ph out of my sleeve and slipped it on the end of my free shaft. I only had a few seconds. I shoved the the ph into his head and it went off. My heart was pumping in turbo mode and probably the needle on my air gage was doing the windshield wiper dance. Anyway the bull broke off shacking his head and droping to the bottom. I didn't stick around, I made for the surface and boat. Like i said in earlier posts my sea hornet trigger assy. was shattered. The shaft was still in the gun. If there was recoil i didn't feel it at the time. I didn't get hurt. Maybe i was just lucky. If you have ever hunted with a large cal. rifle you know what i mean. At the target range you feel the recoil, when you shoot your game, you don't. You should fire your ph, so you know what to expect, sound wise. You can shoot a wreck or large rock before coming up from your dive. Just let your buddy know ahead of time.
