Had two days of great diving despite the blow up on Sunday afternoon. Sat- Shot one nice hog, a number of decent scamp, and caught 2 slippers. No pics. Sunday hit another part of the ledge/secret hole, and hit a home run. All big fish on this part of the ledge. Played with the gags, for 2 dives until I decided a powerhead would be the only alternative for 60-70lb fish. Especially after all the cuts and bruises. My dad shot one in the 60 lb range, and by the time I came over to help with the fight the fish had already knoced his mask off cut his eye and busted his nose! I hope the pics show up good. Ended up with a 28.5lb hog snapper and a 22lb genuine red, as well as a number of scamps. I think the hog is a state record, but I dont know exactly what the record is ~28lbs?? Anyway, no biologist to back me up, but I have 3 witnesses if that counts! Hey Rob, These pics wont upload, I will send them to you.

Nice fish! Les told me that the state record is about 19 pounds (taken on hook and line). I am not aware of any SC scuba spearfishing records. Did you by any chance get any measurements (total or fork length, girth, etc.)? Just curious.

How deep were those big gags?

Bryan: They get 28 pounders up there more often than they want us to know.

John.....I wouldn't doubt it for a second from the pictures I've seen. That is a nice hogfish, well done. 28 lbs though??

Well, compare it to the 22# snapper, it must be 28.5 :)

Both are very nice fish!

Gags were all over 50lbs. 4-5' each, so im guessing 50-75 lbs. I will post the pic of my dad's eye after the fight.

Why did someone punch that guy in the eye?

Was it for being overly optimistic about the weight of the Hogfish?

I have never seen a 28 lb hog before, but this one sure looks like a 20 lb hog to me.

You broke my Bullshit meter, thanks alot, now I have to buy a new one!

Watch you talkin bout willis.
28.5 lbs??
Its a very nice fish but you may want to double check the accuracy of that scale. Not trying to be a jerk but compare the hog to the gag in my avatar. My avatar gag is 28 pounds on a certified scale. Its also being held against my body and Im 6'1", 190 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal. :D
you telling me that hoggy weighs .5 pounds more?
Id say 20 pounds is generous.
Spring scales are notorious for being way off on fish weights on occasion. ;)

Damn, I undershot him by 18......but this hog was weighed on the bounce offshore.....You know, when you hold the scale and fish up in 6 ft seas and read what the indicator says after the first bounce......nice fish though but 28 lbs.....Do you work for NOAA ? Step away from the bong Dude! :D

Guys, I will say this much - It was reported earlier that people had caught hogs with dimensions similar to a 22 pound hog, but they only weighed half that. Even if those particular hogs were "karen carpenter" hogs, that variation could be difficult to spot in the upward direction as well.

Believe it, they are out here in SC.

Goldfinch, What kind of scale did you use?

I do believe that somewhere in SC is a 28lber....Its just not that fish.
That is a damn fine fish though.

This hog is not held way out away from my body . I'm 5'9" 207lbs.

Again, your fish is beautiful and I am happy that you nailed it!

Help me out and guess the weight on the next few hogs photos that I post.

I'll bet you'll be surprised what they actually weigh. Jason

Hey guys thanks for all your support. The fish was weighed with a spring scale, but checked for accuracy with my weights. Its mighty flattering that you guys are so jealous; and if your not...where's your hog. And Jaizzen, your fish is about 13 lbs.

I am definately jealous that you got out diving and found a great fish! I will allways be jealous of anyone who's shooting when I'm working :D . I have quite a few over 20lbs and some have even been posted is the Florida West Coast section. In fact so have most of the guys who posted above.

The little hog that I posted was 15.2lbs gutted.

The bigger of the 2 was 19.7lbs gutted. Your hog is obviously 8+lbs heavier than the one in photo #2...... Right????

Still a great fish!

I've shot one or two big hogfish in my day. Check out several pics at:http://www.spearboard.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=6. No fish shown is over 22#, and note that I am 6' 0'' and 205# of pure diesel sexiness. Perhaps a gravity flux in the space-time continuum on the day you weighed in might explain the seemingly high weight of the photographically "pushed" fish? Regardless, it's a very respectable fish, and one that would take two micro-seconds for me to post on Spearboard if I had shot it.

Don't flatter yourself thinking that people are posting their doubts out of jealousy. You will find that the best spearfishermen in the US reside here on this website, and you a redlining their bullshit detectors.....

For perspective, I am 6'2" and 284lbs. of fiberglass shattering Manhood. As it takes one hell of a hog to out shadow just one of my massive man boobs, this fine 18 lb. specimen is just a prison bitch to your geglomonous record breaking Hog! I will retreat to my pity pool in a jealous rage and pray to the great monster hog gods to someday shoot such a fish and become worthy of your ball sweat.

It is not that we are jealous, it is that we can easily tell by the pictures, that those fish are no where near what you are claiming them to be.

I would say the American Red is about 12 lbs, and the Hog is 18-20lbs.

Both are nice fish, but not near the weight you are claiming.
