Any of you guys ever seen a spare shaft holder for JBL Magnum 450 XHD? This gun comes with the 3/8" diameter shaft but the portion that the trigger locks into is 5/16". SO, I was thinking about using a 5/16" freeshaft, hence would need 5/16" freeshaft holder. I would imagine that this gun with a 5/16" shaft could really reach out and touch some fish.
Comments? Ideas? Smart ass remarks?

marcus,
I have pondered the same thought. I have a 450 mag as well and I'm seriously considering rigging it with the commercial line set up and spare shaft holder from spearfish specialties. I have checked ray oders website and I wonder if he makes a 3/8 shaft?

If you don't find what you are looking for on Ray's site, call or email him. He has and can make much more than his site indicates.

I bought an open muzzle for my gun in anticipation of modifying it to shoot a shaft where the line is tied to a hole in the back of the shaft. I've done this same thing to my 42 AB Biller.
If you modify your's with a spare shaft holder, let me know how it turns out. Ideally, I'd like to be shooting a 5/16" free shaft with this gun. I would think that it would be effective to 35' at least.
Also, let me know if Ray Odor has the 3/8" shafts.

ray emailed me back and he does not make 3/8 shafts but that the 5/16 shafts will work. Also, he said that he will be making spare shaft holders for the 450mag in a few weeks. But I question if the smaller shaft will have to much play around the muzzel and not shoot consistant. Any thought on that yet?

I was thinking that it should be ok as long as your holding the gun level. A little experimentation in a long pool should tell all. Alternatively, I'm sure you could get the 5/16" slide that the plain 450 mag has, and install it on your 450 mag XHD.
I've got the break away tip on mine. I just got done installing a firing pin in the end of the shaft so I can use Ray's slip on PH.
All I have to do now is pull off the break away tip and slide the power head on and I'm ready to PARTY! That is if the PH fits the shaft on the end, it looks like it will. This way, when I get my 5/16" spare shaft in my holder on the side, I'll be able to use the slip on PH on both my line shaft and my spare. From the looks of how my 3/8" shaft is built I'll be able to use the spare shaft holder made by SS specialties with my 3/8" line shaft.
ROCK ON!

I have a Competition Magnum with a spare shaft holder I used one made by AB Biller as I get the pictures uploaded I will post them. You can email at gpmerrill@earthlink.net and I will send you pictures and instructions as to what I did, if you want. It works out great.

Cool! I was planning on doing the same thing. Would be nice to see how you got it accomplished. Would also like to check out your gun. I just converted my mine last night so that the line is attached to the back of the shaft, like a riffe. Used the heavy monofilament. I also bought an open muzzle for this gun.

Here is what a JBL looks like with an extra shaft. The shaft holder was hogged out in order to fit the 3/8 shaft. By going to a smaller shaft you shouldn't have to do that. I used 3.5 inch SS bolts to mount the holder, had to extend the holder away from the gun due to the JBL muzzle. The bolt has a rubber tubing around it were it enters the barrel, to prevent a reaction between the two metals. It works out fine. Any questions or comments email me.

How did you watertight the point where the holder enters the barrel/tube?
Is your setup completely freeshaft?
What's the attachment on the end of your spare shaft, a PH?

The end where they attach are not water tight. They aren't even water tight when they are stock. The barrel has a water tigh plug in it just below the bolt. They come from the factory with this plug, you can tell where it is by looking for the slight crimp in the barrel. The is a plug at both ends of the barrel.
The attchment is just a broadhead tip. I keep my PH on my new gun. There is ring so I clip the line to that shaft if I so desire.
It can be tricky at to hold it level, but underwater it fairly easy it just takes a little getting used to it.
