The Genesis situation

Guys, it's time to stop talking about Genesis.

This board was started to give us a place to discuss spearfishing and diving in general. I think it's a fantastic idea. I like the increased freedom of this board over FS. But ya know, someone said a while back that this place was called Spearboard, not Karlboard. I fear that we're gravitating towards what it shouldn't be; a place to bash Genesis. I hate the guy as much as any of you and can find plenty of reasons to ridicule and resent nearly every one of his posts. But it's kind of like turning around to drive past a bad car wreck again. You can't help but look at the spectacle, but you shouldn't keep going back to look at it again and again.
When I went to UF, there was a preacher that came by once a year in early December. He'd stand in the Plaza of Americas all day and welcome debates from all comers. Brother Jed was a weirdo, but fairly smart. Genesis reminds me of Brother Jed in that he argues and argues and argues but never, EVER concedes a point or gives his opponent any respect. All of the college students figured that out about Brother Jed, it's time for us to figure that out about Genesis.

The only attention he seems to be able to get is negative attention, but he still loves it. He loves pissing people off. He enjoys getting our goat and is probably thrilled right now that he has succeeded. Personally, I don't want to give him that satisfaction.

Anyway, it's too much fun making fun of his comments to stop completely, either here or on FS. I'm still going to mess with him a bit on the FS forum. But over here, let's keep the # of threads and posts dedicated to him to a minimum.

I'd agree, but 1 of the things everyone's raved about regarding this forum is the lack of censorship. People can easily get offended when you edit their posts no matter how good the reason; we're all playing nice now and I wouldn't want to change that.
Besides, comments every once in a while about the Gman are OK, they were just getting too frequent!

swimming with dolphins? 4:47 PM 10/27/2002


does anyone know or has experience with dolphins in the wild being aggressive towards swimmers. i have a habit of jumping in the water and swimming with them. i have been told that they can be agressive. i have never seen it or experience any agression from dolphins.
maybe one day i can make a friend like flipper and use him to catch big fish,

"Take" is defined in the MMPA as any act that alters behavior patterns, tends to harass, or could have harmful effect (you don't have to kill them outright._ This has been litigated, and feeding a dolphin in the wild has been found to qualify.

Feeding the dolphin? Is that what I said? No, he wasn't feeding him, he was actually trying to nurse that hogfish back to health. He felt bad for the little feller so he jumped in the water, attempting to pass water through his gills, when that SOB dolphin came from no where and stole his fish.
Pictures? I didn't see no stinking pictures!

I grew up in that inlet he takes that Gigaturd boat out every week, and we used to get drunk as high schoolers and feed dolphins dead bait. The dolphins are ****ing rad, like pets and shit. In fact, one of our dogs was swimming in the water, and the dolphin was playing with him. Freaked the dog out, but the dolphin loved it. How can you not feed a dolphin when they come up to the boat???

1) No officer is ****ing bored enough to take someone to jail over feeding a dolphin. Picking dingleberrys off of a ducks ass is more fun and productive than that.

2) No officer will risk being seen in court over that kind of charge. It's embarrassing. Makes him look like hes a stupid cop. Especially when the judge laughs at him and throws the case out.

3) What's the purpose?

4) Gman likes to say "and SEIZE your boat" for every stupid ****ing thing he disagrees with. Powerhead a fish...seize your boat...get a speeding ticket...seize your boat...Vote for McBride...seize your boat. I swear, you can get caught with 5 undersized lobster and they still wont take your ****ing boat. Gman is IGNORANT in reality, but I guess IGNORANCE is bliss...like Patrick Starfish says in "spongebob".

I guess the best thing to do is to ignore him, but you guys like to call his bullshit just like I do. I don't blame ya.

Yes. I know someone years ago who got caught with 2 over. I know the guy and I believe it was an honest mistake, diving with 4 other people in the keys and lost count. They were as ****ing drunk as a skunk in a peach orchard too. I can't remember what his fines came out to be, but it really wasn't all that much. Maybe a couple of hundred dollars? That's it. The cops ****ed with them for being drunk but let them on their way.

This was a couple years ago, but I think it's still current.

The maximum for each count is $500 and possible forfiture of anything that helped you get the critter.

We went through this a while back and came up the the most expensive bug (fine only) is about $2000. That would be an undersize, out of season, female with eggs, with a hole in her. I guess that if you now added in taking her in a protected no-take area of the keys you could get that up to $2500.

G-man is right about the boat. Normally what is confiscated is up to the officer handling the event though. If he doesn't take it when the ticket is written it rarely comes up in later discussions with the judge.

I once saw a man taken to jail in his underwear by an OK Game Warden after he got abusive with the warden. Just because the fool had filled the back end of his pickup truck with an illegal gill net covered by a half ton of largemouth bass he didn't think that the warden should be "picking" on his drunk ass and proceeded to cuss out the warden. He went to jail, but the tow truck took his almost new truck, his boat & trailer, and his clothes along with the net and fish. The warden was nice enough to leave his wife and kids standing at the ramp instead of arresting them as well. I think the warden left him his underwear just so his bare ass wouln't be on the seat in the back of his patrol car on the way to jail.

The ONLY law enforcement officer in the US that has more power to ruin your life is a Texas Ranger. The warden can search you or your house without a warrant, confiscate you or your property, and in general make your life miserable as long as you remain in his jurisdiction. The Texas Ranger can do all that, as well as follow you anywhere in the world to continue the treatment if the Texas Governor requests or condones it. The Ranger answers ONLY to his superiors and The Governor.

The net result is that if stopped by a warden BE POLITE even if you think the warden is wrong! The amount of pain he can cause you without even trying is way beyond what the "big three" of your dentist, lawyer and proctologist can do. Most wardens can be reasonable folks if treated properly and it's obvious you aren't rapeing the reef.

I got stopped by a Texas Ranger outsife of Lubbock (sp?) this past January, during the start of a rare Texas snow storm. I thought when he saw those Florida plates he was going to hammer me. But I was just as polite as I could be, "Yes sir, you're absolutely right, I was speeding..." Let me off. Real nice guy.

I would be the same way around any marine patrol agent or game warden.

There is no way they would prosecute giving a dolphin a hogfish. But what about Genesis saying (or implying, at the very least), that he reported me to the FWC because of giving the dolphin a fish. Like you said, people love dolphin. Most people would give the dolphin a fish. But to G, it's a federal case.

A friend of the family a few years ago was caught by FMP leaving the Tortugas with a really nice lobster. They basically said, c'mon you know you have to let it go. So he took a picture of himself, the lobster, and the FMP before dumping it over the side. FMP was laughing their ass off.
