View Full Version : Uploaded Picture Size

It looks like some guys have an issue with posting HUGE pics.
Is there anyway to limit the size of pics people upload? These HUGE pics are hard to view. If you limit the size to say like 800x600 pixels it would make it alot easier to view and save on bandwidth.
Does anyone have a better solution?

I don't think anyone has been doing it intentionally, I just think some guys have had trouble sizing their photos correctly. Once you get the hang of it, it's no problem.

Different people have different skills, software and computer experience. For some it's a miracle when they manage to get the photo uploaded at all. I'd rather see a diversity of photos from as broad a spectrum of people as possible and not discourage people from posting their photos because they might do it "wrong".
I think that the people that know how to do it "right" are going to do so. The others are going to do the best they can, and I'd rather see their oversize photos than none at all. You're dealing with a bunch of spearfishermen for god's sake, not a bunch of IT nerds. :p
The other options would be to further limit the size of files that can be uploaded or have the server resize larger photos down to "standard" size (if that is possible) or have the moderators resize the photos that they have a problem with.
It never occurred to me that it was a problem, but maybe that's because I have high speed internet access. Maybe the problem is that the oversize photos make your fish look small in comparison? :D I bet the next thing that we are going to hear is that some of us write posts that are too long :rolleyes:

i have an email adress at www.fishingworks.com. that site allows you to have a online photo album(im sure lots you u guys know about it). when you upload your pics, if they are over 500x500, it will automatically resize them for you. when you attach a 500x500 size pic to your post, it doesnt mess up anything. its a nice size, and is nice for people that dont have a fast internet connection like myself.:D

HEY! Watch it, there are a few IT nerds in here!
It is real easy, set a reasonable limit on file size and if someone puts up a low res large image have a mod resize it.

I resize the pics if I get the chance. I don't see any reason to delete them if they are too big.
Granted, if the person that originated the thread deletes the first post in the thread the WHOLE thread goes away. That may have happened to your pics?
Heard on the IT support line: "What's this regedit thing? Do I REALLY need all these keys?? Cause I deleted them.

Here is a post I did a couple of weeks ago. If you have photoshop, it will help you resize photos:
Here is a trick for you guys who use Photoshop. I'm sure most of you know about it, but in case you don't.
You've just uploaded 6 photos that you want to use for Spearboard. You know you want each photo to be around500 -600K, but instead of going through and resizing each photo, you should create an action, so that you do it only once (the same action can be used for all future spearboard photos as well). Once the action is done, you create a "batch command" that will apply the resizing to all open images.
Here is how you do it:
1. Click "create new action" in the floating actions window;
2. Name the action "Spearboard Photos, or Forum Photos"
2. Resize a single image so that it is good for spearboard use (here is a shortcut....right click at the top of an image instead of using the drop down menu);
3. Press the "Stop recording" button so that the action is stopped.
4. Go the file drop down menu at the top of the screen, and select, "Automate", and then select "Batch"
5. Select "Spearboard Size" as your Action, and "Opened Files" as your Source.
6. Voila! All files, no matter how many you had opened, are perfectly sized for Spearboard or other forums. Now all you have to do is save them.
Maybe this will help....

If you are using windows xp there is a much easier way to resize pictures with Microsoft Powertoys.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe
after you install this you just right click the file or files and resize to the size you want as shown in the two pictures below.

Microsoft powertoys is a collection of little add on programs that are pretty handy.
