After seeing some of the recent Warsaw posts, I was just curious, do people other than me shoot Warsaws in water less than 100 ft??? Has anyone else ever shot or seen one while freediving???

In high school I shot a 20lb fish freediving in 30 feet
I've shot 2 around 30lbs in 90ft
Last year I shot a 25lb in 120 ft

I've seen several other fish to maybe 70lbs that for one reason or another I wasn't able to shoot all in water less than 150ft.

Thanks,
Jason

I got a 100 pounder at 60 feet off Pensacola in 1963, but of course that is ancient history.

Someone who did not want to get into the discussion on the board told me that when they are seen relatively shallow on the FL east coast, its because of upwellings of cold water. If that is so, then it would help explain my fish being shallow, as it was in the middle of the winter and the water was very cold off Pensacola.

Come to think of it the water was in the 50's on the bottom all those times except one. But when is it not during the summer.

Canaveral to Georgia they tend to stay deeper than 120' but may move inshore during thermoclines. We have shot warsaw and even a coupla true snowys the past 2 bad thermo-cline years.

We've probably shot 3 or 4 over the past 6 years in less than 100 ft. If I recall correctly, none were bigger than 20 lbs.

Here's one from this weekend - 210fsw. Its hard to tell scale from the pic, but he was about 40 pounds. I tried doing a Rocky Balboa on him with a punch to the head when he got in my grill.

Chad's 13.3 pound warsaw was a IUSA (freedive) world record at the time. That gives you an indication how often the larger specimens get into shallower water.

The current record warsaw (39.4#) was shot in 10/2004 in Brazil.

Jason you already know this but I got a 25 pounder 2 years ago, and saw like a 70 lb fish in 80 fsw on my FIRST DIVE EVER when you left me so I was too scared to shoot it
