In the Oahu shooters thread someone asked how to make FADs. With all of us here I am sure we can get several good ways to make these...for that matter, what I'm thinking of might not even be what the guy in Hawaii was thinking about...
Basically, to do it the way I've seen it done you need to get:
1 volleyball net
Floatation material (a bunch of old crab trap balls, anchor balls, or anything
like that...)
1 five gallon bucket
5 gallons of concrete
1 stainless post with an eye
some durable line.
All ya do is fill the bucket with the cement and put the post in it with the eye sticking out. Fold the volleyball net in half and tie it to the eye of the post with enough rope to make your FAD sit where ya want it in the water column (this said, of course you would need to know how deep you want to drop it.) Stuff the floatation material into the folded net and boat on out to your new private spot. Hit MOB on the GPS after yer anchored and drop the whole thing overboard.
A few of these together have done much better than single drops. Life duration will vary due to materials used, local trawlers and weather, but stuff shows up pretty quickly once you drop them.
