Sure...
But they're usually sorta mushy and muddy tasting. At a pound and a half to three pounds or so they are positively delicious.

Definitely big fish but I really don't like freshwater catfish. I have found that they have this muddy taste to them.

Seen films of it. Looks like fun. Would I be a "fool" if I tried it or wanted to try it?

"I pitty da fool"
In reality it's fun, we dive Lake Pottytrain (Pontchatrain) for them. Well, much smaller versions,,, a thirty to fifty pound one is big in the lake.
Notice the viz in the pics of those big cats. When spearing for them you stick your face in a hole wallowed out under a log on the bottom and look for wiskers. You'd be surprised how big of a cat can come out of a small hole!

I use to go with my grandfather up in the Mississippi River. He would wade out to about thigh deep and feel for big logs or undercuts. When he found one he would kneel down and feel around or just go under. When he found one he would stick his hand in the fish's mouth as far as he could and commence to wrestlin' with it.
He loved it! And I am glad I had the chance to do that with him.
Let's see... He was waste deep in the Mississippi wrestling a fish and most of the guys in this forum are 100 fsw or more wrestling with them. I ask you now, Who is the fool? :D

When small these catfish are real life predators. They chase down prey, bluegill, crayfish, etc, and are about as voracious as grouper. But as they get bigger, they get lazy. They hole up throughout the day, and suck down anything that gets near their huge piehole. When they get that big, they can thrash, and sure, they're strong, but they just don't put the heart into it. I would rather wrestle a 100 lber, than a 20 lber!
